How often do you guys use your forward assists?
I ask because I was shooting with a friend the other day, and when his gun didn't go into battery fully I told him to tap the forward assist. He had no idea what I was talking about, and after showing him he was amazed that it even had a use. While I've never used it on my gun, I was aware of it's purpose and was surprised that he wasn't. This made me curious on if this was a commonly used feature. Matt |

Ninja here! I chose the VLTOR-MUR upper with forward assist for a rifle I hunt with (they make one without it.) While I appreciate the look of a slab-side, being able to ease the bolt shut, then use the FA to quietly complete the lockup is a plus. I've never had to use it in my fighting carbines. During practice / Training, that is... |
| On occassion, to make sure the bolt fully closed when riding it forward, could use the bolt cut-out, but I don't. Have used it once or twice when things were dry or fouled, never had a problem as a result, but then the BCG has always been far enough forward that the hammer had dropped already so it didn't actually do any good. |

I HAVE used it. Quietly loading while hunting, etc.
It is simply not a good idea to use it for its supposedly intended purpose, however. As others have noted, if the round won't chamber during firing and normal loading sequence then forcing it is likely to partially chamber it and stick it good without actually and fully chambering it. Thus, you then have a tied up rifle. Before I knew anything about the AR system I thought the whole disconnected operating rod thing was a stupid design. But subsequently, it is pretty obvious it is not the disadvantage it seems. I mean, how many times did I ever use the bolt handle on my M1's to FORCE a round home into the chamber? |
| I had to use mine this week for the first in 25 years. The bolt was jammed out of battery. Had to pound the shit to get into battery so I could remove the upper and lower. When I separated the upper the bolt was jammed home. Had used a wood bench to bang the charging handle to get the bolt out of the upper. I blowned a primer it must of got wedged in the workings. If I did not have forward assist my range day would been over |

I never use mine, but I keep the rifle clean and lubed. What I can't comprehend is how you can own a rifle and not understand everything about it.. This was what shocked me... Why is this shocking? I guess I can't say I know for sure that MOST guys don't know squat about their guns, but a goodly percentage don't. It is pathetic, but then, how many guys change the oil in their own car these days... |

I use mine in the jungles of vietNAM when my Matel16 would jam up from all the fouling, mud, and charlie blood in the action. Thank God I had my forward assist.
I am only commenting now to get my post count up as this topic has been and the next person who brings it up should be just saying.......

As I read Black Rifle 1, I thought it would have been easier to go with an M3 Greas Gun bolt-finger/thumbhole.
It would allow press checks and not allow some fellow to pick up a stick and beat holy heck out of the thing in order to completely tie up the gun and reduce it to a club. Uncle wanted the now-standard thing, but I still think the bolthole would have been a better idea. |
