TNVC Introduces Exclusive Filmed Super Gain (FSG) Image Intensifier Tubes For years, many night vision users have focused almost entirely on FOM numbers when evaluating image intensifier tubes. While specs do matter, experienced users know that real-world performance is about far more than a single number on a data sheet. CLICK HERE TO SHOP TNVC FSG SYSTEMS What Is FSG? FSG stands for Filmed Super Gain. Developed exclusively for TNVC in partnership with a leading U.S. image intensifier manufacturer, FSG tubes were originally created in response to a Federal government requirement for improved low-light performance. Rather than simply chasing “spec sheet flex,” the goal was to create meaningful real-world capability enhancements for users operating in difficult environments. Traditional Gen 3 tubes typically operate in the 40,000–80,000 fl/fc luminance gain range, with most users seeing tubes average somewhere around 60,000–70,000 fl/fc. TNVC FSG tubes operate at approximately 105,000 fl/fc luminance gain. That increased amplification results in: • Brighter perceived imagery • Improved visibility in darker environments • Better environmental processing • Enhanced situational awareness • Greater ability to see into shadowed areas and low ambient light conditions This isn’t marketing hype or simply “turning the brightness up.” Increased luminance gain directly affects how much information the user can process in degraded lighting conditions. Why Does Gain Matter? Luminance gain is essentially light amplification, converting photons into electrons and multiplying them. The brighter image provided by FSG technology helps the user’s eye remain more constricted compared to dimmer systems. This can improve perceived visual acuity, reduce eye strain, and make environmental interpretation easier during extended use. Simply put, the brain processes brighter images more efficiently than darker ones. Modern image intensifier manufacturing has also improved dramatically. Lower noise floors and cleaner tube performance mean increased gain levels can now provide more useful information without the drawbacks many users associate with older night vision systems. “But Won’t It Be Noisy?” One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding higher gain tubes is that they will have too much "noise". Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is measured the same regardless of whether the tube is standard gain or FSG. The result is that modern FSG tubes retain comparable noise characteristics while providing noticeably brighter perceived imagery and improved environmental interpretation. Additionally, manual gain housings allow users to adjust brightness to personal preference while still benefiting from the expanded amplification capability of FSG technology. What About Lifespan and Durability? There is no reduction in service life or durability compared to standard Gen 3 tubes. Manufacturer testing has previously been conducted at luminance gain levels up to 120,000 fl/fc without adverse effects on reliability or lifespan. As such, FSG tubes carry TNVC's standard 10-Year Warranty! Where FSG Fits in the Market TNVC believes FSG fills an important gap in the current night vision market. Not every user can, or should, spend ultra-premium money chasing extremely the highest FOM tubes. In real-world use, properly built 1800–2000 FOM what many would call average performing tubes paired with increased luminance gain can provide will provide extremely capable performance for the overwhelming majority of users. FSG allows those tubes to “punch above their weight class.” Even extremely high FOM tubes struggle in severely degraded environments without adequate amplification, illumination, or supplemental thermal capability. This is where FSG shines! Practical, usable performance that allows users to free budget for other critical capability enhancers like: • Thermal augmentation systems • Handheld thermal monoculars • Better helmet setups • Training • Lasers and illumination tools Capability is a system, not just a spec sheet. American-Made Capability TNVC has long supported domestic manufacturing and maintaining a strong American industrial base for night vision technology. Rather than simply telling users not to buy imported products, TNVC wanted to create a legitimate American-made alternative that delivers meaningful performance at a more approachable cost. The TNVC FSG platform reflects that philosophy: Real capability. Real support. Real-world affordability. Availability TNVC FSG tubes are available exclusively through TNVC and authorized TNVC dealers in complete TNVC-built systems. FSG tubes are compatible with nearly all currently available night vision housings, including both manual gain and automatic brightness control configurations. At launch, FSG tubes will be available only in complete TNVC-built systems. Individual tube sales may occur in the future. As always, TNVC-built systems are backed by TNVC’s lifecycle support, customer service, and long-standing commitment to education and end-user capability development. TO CELEBRATE THE LAUNCH, TNVC IS GIVING AWAY A NOCTURN CHIMERA PANORAMIC GOGGLE WITH TNVC FSG! | How will these tubes perform across a wide range of conditions? Living in SD, it can go from ambient lighting conditions in town to DARK in a few miles where you'll need an IR illuminator. |

They're going to perform the same as comparable standard gain tubes in terms of they will perform better in high light vs low light but they will have a noticeably brighter image. That doesn't mean that they won't need additional IR in some situations. If it gets dark enough, even extremely high spec tubes will still struggle. - TNVC Will |

Does this also mean the eyes will be less adjusted to light from looking at the brighter image in the tube? If brighter images allows for better visual acuity, it's counterintuitive that you could get better use from lower resolution and SNR because now your eye resolution gets better? |

No, it's about the same in terms of how your eyes will be once you take your eye(s) away. The brightness even with standard gain GP or WP is still high enough to require your eyes to readjust to natural vision. The only way to make that transition a little better would be to lower gain to an extremely low level. The FSG FOM specs average between 1700-2000 FOM. These still are good specs. Honestly, in practical real-world use this FOM will do everything that a much higher FOM level will do. The best way I can describe the benefit of the higher gain is if you've used Photonis tubes vs US Gen 3. Although the Photonis tubes are still awesome, they are dimmer than US Gen 3, and most users (but admittedly not all) prefer the brighter image. A good indicator is that Photonis is now offering high-gain tubes to be closer to US Gen 3. Raising the gain of US Gen 3 offers the same benefits. Gain has definitely been forgotten as an important spec because US Gen 3 gain has stayed consistent for many many years. This is due to contract requirements and as an example of how it is beneficial some of the newer contracts are actually calling for higher gain. Most people think of gain as only being output brightness but the reason it makes the output brighter is because a higher gain is actually amplifying more light. - TNVC Will |
