Yesterday at a rifle match, a competitor's rifle locked up tighter than a drum.  Bolt could not be retracted.  Usually that's a primer has backed out and gotten into the trigger mechanism, but not this time.  After much swearing and screeching, another competitor who is a relatively decent gunsmith took the rifle home and, after more swearing and screeching, ended up removing the buttstock and buffer tube to get the thing apart and discovered that the little "stonger" tip of the forward assist had broken off and jammed things up.

I'd never heard of such a failure and am betting that the assembly had received a couple hard whacks at some point in the past, but, the first thing I thought of was, "the old slick-sides don't do that."

Same here! Any more info as to the history?

This ranks above the recent CH issue...

It happens. Pat Rogers stated here that he sees it 1-3 times a year.

I've seen some match rifles with an empty FA holes in their uppers. I've wondered why, but this seems to answer that question.

We've had one of those exact failures in my department.  Locks it up hard too.  Weird deal since we never use the FA in any of our drills or techniques.  It does happen, although rare.

That and it takes an ounce off. Two ounces if it's a proper slickside.

Generally you want to put ounces on a match rifle.  Many of them.

When Pat Rogers made his comment, did he have an explanation as to the cause of the breakage, or say anything else about it?
