Because there was severe damage to the spillway downstream of the gates.   If it erodes uphill it could damage the dam itself.   They ran it as hard as they thought was safe.

If the emergency spillway was built correctly  the plan would probably have worked.

They are getting hit with a triple whammy.

Too much water

failure of the primary spillway

failure of the emergency spillway.

Now they are having to take chances beyond what is reasonable and prudent because they are running out of options.

Yes, but on Friday the smug engineers were saying that the spillway was built on bedrock for the first 1/3rd of the run. So much fail on this.

And then later this week, the rain runoff will overflow the system again, the spillway WILL fail, another vac will be called, and people will ignore it because they cried wolf....

Is the E spillway that is in trouble or is it the parking area to the left.  That looks to be a poorly designed and looks like it can just wash out around that left side unless it's all bedrock.

They zoomed in on the lights enough to distort the view but I'm monitoring the reflection of the light off of the water and it's not moving much, if at all.  Should be able to see that water go when the espillway does.

They were pumping shitloads of concrete to the base of the spillway wall. If it was moored to the bed rock that would be a non issue.

The UC should have already filed an ICS resource request for that.

He could have assets there in a heart beat from AIRSTA Sacramento after approval.

so theres a hole in the ESpillway, that has not gotten worse as bad as they though it may. They may try and drop rocks into the hole with helicopters.

so may not boom now, but no way they can fix it before next rain storm.

Same to your family.

I'm 2 hours south of Oroville and don't expect any issues here, but I have family in Marysville, my youngest son is at school in Rocklin, and friends throughout the valley.

At what point do you start identifying areas where you make controlled failures to prevent it from being worse when it fails on it's own accord?

Was it page 77 that had the construction drawings for the weir?

can someone post those on here?

And the big question, is the "DD" section (the tallest part) of the e-spillway sitting on granite, or is it sitting on fill, in which case is the erosion undercutting?

Full is defined as 900 feet.  It's not that they have to use the spill way at 84%.  That's when they can use it.  Spillway is at 811 ft if I remember correctly

I could not find the specs for the spillway elevation.  The closest info that I saw was at 84% of full they have to use it.  That would suggest that the spillway is even lower than that.  Since full is not defined either there really isn't a number.  If they started running water on Tuesday then you could guess it was 84% full that day.  So whatever that elevation was will get you close.

The one article I read said the regulatory agency required them to start releasing at 84%.  Who knows if they got their facts right.  If it is 811 then they had a lot of room that they could have been pulling water.

I used Google to pull a specific days results and found info that they were trying to maintain an elevation of 850ft for the lake on Tuesday.  Also on Tuesday the spillway was supposed to be running at 70,000 cfs with an inflow of 130,000 cfs but instead they shut it off.

it may be that area not sure.

until water level drops a lot they cannot determine if its a crack in the concrete ( bad but not worst case) or undercutting or a failure at bedrock level. (oh fuck)

Look at the government response to this, compare it to reality, and burn that into your head. When there's some emergency where you live, REMEMBER THIS. You need to pay attention and look out for yourself. Don't rely on the government or national media for information. Have a plan in case you have to bug out.

Once the parking lot fails, it's all going to go. It'll look like a piece of weather stripping getting pulled off.

None of that complex is moored to the bedrock.
