I dont understand whats up with the mask. Everyone knows they're russian. I would think intimidation, some of those guys look mean as all get out with those masks on. truth. go put a ski mask on and look at yourself in the mirror, chances are you look meaner that without it. Dual purpose. Intimidation is a big factor, so is anonamity. You see this in everything from rebel militia to US Swat. |

Seems like if you aren't issued it, you can buy it if you really want to. That said, I've no factual basis for my statement. I did find it interesting the degree of parts from the new zenit stuff to the CAA polymer handguard set / AVG. It's really speculation unless someone here knows one of em. ETA: I find it interesting that on the 7.62 rifles one will find steel or Bakelite mags. I would expect to see an AK103 mag, but I guess they don't come with the old stock AKMS's they have. ETA 2: it's also interesting to see 7.62 there at all. Makes sense for the chap carrying the suppressed rifle; however, in reading up on the Chechnya conflicts, despite the love for the 5.45, they felt the need to have some 7.62 rifles in the mix during urbanish operations. Even in the most recent pics of Russian troops in the Caucasus regions you can find quite a bit of 104's in service. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Ányone have an explaination for the hodge podge of gear and customization of rifles in these pics? These guys look more like contractors than regular army. Been reading quite a bit on the BBC and Janes.com on this, Janes in particular had a nice little write up regarding the similarities between current events and the '79 takeover of Kabul.
Back to a gear question though, does anyone have any info on the tan/foliage pants I've seen in some pictures? Look comfy as hell. |

I mean the Russians tried and field miserably. I guess they feal capable of handling Ukraine. As it is really close by and small.
The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted nine years from December 1979 to February 1989. Part of the Cold War, it was fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces against multi-national insurgent groups called the Mujahideen, mostly composed of two alliances – the Peshawar Seven and the Tehran Eight. The Peshawar Seven insurgents received military training in neighboring Pakistan and China,[9] as well as weapons and billions of dollars from the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and other countries.[3][4][5][9][26] The Shia groups of the Tehran Eight alliance received support from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Early in the rule of the PDPA government, the Maoist Afghanistan Liberation Organization also played a significant role in opposition, but its major force was defeated by late 1979, prior to the Soviet intervention. The decade-long war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran. Hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilians were killed in addition to the rebels in the war. The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on December 24, 1979, under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.[27] The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989, under the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has sometimes been referred to as the "Soviet Union's Vietnam War" or the "Bear Trap" |
