I'll go against the grain here and say that I find her character boring.

She's better than the closet homo played by Captain Cardboard.

Let's face it, she's got a cute face but not much else going on.

Episode 3

"Maybe Tomorrow
"

'Ani lets Ray know she’s in charge after he goes rogue on the
investigation, even though he stumbles on crucial evidence that takes
the case in a new direction. Meanwhile, Frank meets with his former
associates in the criminal underworld, but they make it clear they’re
not taking orders from him anymore; and Paul hits the streets to see if
Caspar’s face rings a bell.'

Watching episode 2 again. Caspere was shot at point blank range in the wedding tackle with  "some kind of Super X heavy load".  Ray: "A coup de grace".

Not sure how I missed that the first time, maybe it was the looking away from male groin.

Also, Dr. Rick Springfield has a book by Obama and Roget's thesaurus behind his desk.

On the surface of it, its a good plot.

All of the characters are interesting and well-acted.

The cinematography and production values are good.

But the show does not feel like it should be HBO's summer flagship. We're 37.5% done, and I don't really care who killed the old perv. They haven't done a good job making that important to the show. Don't care about VV's wife's' fertility issues. Don't care about 3 gay days in Al Buttsehkz.

Too many tangents, not enough bread and butter. Like I said, all the actors are really delivering (VV and Farrel especially, IMO), so I'm definitely watching to the end, but this isn't as gripping as S1.

We're only one episode away from being halfway done with S2 and I'm far less interested in the story than I was in the first five minutes of S1.

I too am going to watch until the end, but while S1 constantly demanded my full attention, S2 has devolved almost into 'The Walking Dead' territory where I'm surfing ARFCOM while I watch it because of how often uninteresting it is.

Idiot strip club manage/owner gave Vince Vaugh's character no choice and frankly should count his blessing he's a live.

Why would he be a jerk to  Vince Vaughn? What did he stand to gain from any of his bravado? Stupidest thing, but than again criminals aren't the smartest lot.

The Russians certainly could have killed the City Manager, but didn't.  Vince needs to stop being paranoid about the Russians.  If the Russians wanted his deal dead or him out of the picture he'd just be dead. Russian mob is uber violent when they decide to be violent and they don't care who you are they'll send you to the next world. Russians will go after cops, anybody....a Casino Owner would be nothing to them. Vince Vaughn's character better check his attitude before he ends up tossing gasoline on a fire.

It hasn't really grabbed me either.  I had to watch the first 2 episodes twice just to try to figure out WTH was going on, and why we should care.

I like it.  To me the story is developing well and Collin is the key.  I'm working with a cop now who hit the bottom after he worked a case with a car jacking that turned very violent.  He is doing well now but needed counseling.  He thinks Collins character is typical burn out of a guy who is trying to hang on.

Harsh audience y'all.  Season 1 was epic, no doubt.

S2: Pretty apparent by the supporting cast, and by the theories presented by previous posters here; this is a semi-predictable plot, whereas Season 1 had both occult, and mystery overtones-treading a unpredictable path...leaving lots of little and nagging questions unanswered.  S2 is not so mysterious, no occult and semi-predictable.  Blackmail, sex-freaks, murder, sex cult all interwoven, but no H.P. Lovecraft hints.

OTOH:

If Season 2 did not have to follow the S1 benchmark, I believe we'd be less critical.  Actually an engaging three episodes.  Vince upped the tough guy ante a little, and is quite the dentist.  Cyborg daddy issue chick...acted.  Colin was pretty funny/snarky/menacing in parts, and CHP conflicted-homosexual back story got a bunch less ambiguous.

Still, they over-reached on the cast.  Probably should cut out the conflicted CHP and keep a better tempo, if they had a time machine.

Season 2 is good so far, you dudes are 'tarded.

Season 1 was good, but it was Lost with detectives.  Oh, look at all these complex mysteries...  at the end: inbred redneck serial killers, no complexity, no mystery.

Quit bitching and watch.  Let it build.  Give the story a chance for a little foreplay, they can't just stick their dick in your ass right off.

The season is OK, but ya'll have to remember that it's a different show than last year, they just share a title.

I never saw much VV work besides his role in Mr and Mrs Smith, and I don't have trouble with him playing a tough guy in this role.

But for the life of me, I sure couldn't/can't remember Stan-the-dead-guy, even after I consulted IMDB.

Am I one of the few that thinks that Rachael aint much to look at, and if it wasn't for the 7 seconds of questionable sexual innuendo alluding to ???? she wouldn't be interesting?

And what was up with the scene implying that they were interrupted in the middle of a torrid moment gone wrong, and suddenly she's in a hurry and late for work?  That was too lame an excuse to punt him out the door.

Much of the situational writing hasn't been much better than that, yet.

I'm enjoying this season but it hasn't sucked me in like the first. I feel like the acting is just as good as last season.

What made the first season so compelling was:

1. The Louisana backwoods bayou setting
2. The hints of supernatural elements
3. The split timeline

Corrupt politicians in a California city just doesn't have the same mystique.

Fortunately, this season isn't even halfway through so they've still got a chance to not completely butt fuck the ending like they did last season.

I'm not sure how a conflicted "in the closet" homosexual should act, but all the gasping, darting eyes and slamming drinks at the club were way over the top imo.

It was so over acted to drive the point home that it got annoying. Like the audience was too stupid to figure out what was going on.

"Gasp....all this homo dick....ugghhh....can't handle this....must drink....gasp....did you see that ass?......gasp...."

the last three episodes of the first season of true detective were rubbish. Especially when the fat bastard killer starts doing Shakespeare or some shit.  The whole labyrinthian final showdown was utterly retarded.

I agree with this it does not suck.  It is different from S1, but that's to be expected, S1 was different characters and a different plot.  Every story has to be told in its own way.  Too many are expecting S1 retold, that's not what you should be asking for.

Exactly.

Season 1 was brilliant for about the first 5-6 episodes, but after Reggie Ledoux, it went downhill fast. The finale was like a bad episode of "Criminal Minds."

S2 has failed to do in the first three episodes what S1 accomplished in the first ten minutes of the first episode: pull the majority of viewers in and make them care about the story.

But with your dick in the ass metaphor it's not hard to guess who your favorite character is this season.
