Asphaltis Rapidicus Curvbendis = genius species

In motorcycle road racing we always looked at NASCAR and drag racing as a sport for the short bus crew.

But at the pro level, you gotta have awesome skills, in any motor sport.

At my age, I can't even win at practice any more.

My laps at Charlotte told me the same thing.

Oh, you want me to come out of turn two, nail the gas, and fight the car's tendency to turn left by steering towards the wall?  Ha!

Oh, I get that part.  But trying to get that practice (and mindset) at 40+ ain't happening.

Most people don't have any concept on how hard it is to just qualify.

Just run one lap and make the race.

I'll go on record and say positively that not one person here could take a cup car and qualify it.

I'm thinking we have a pro driver on here. I think he drives a road race Porsche, so I bet we have one.

EXACTLY!

Hard to explain to someone who hasn't t done it that you have to turn TOWARDS the wall to go straight.

(Yes Virginia, I'm sure they set them up that way on purpose to minimize people getting into the outside wall)

We do have a professional driver on the board. I suspect he'd do a decent job, but only he can say for certain.

I for one know I can't. I know where my talent lies, and it's working on them, not driving 'em.

Could I match the times that they get with the cars they drive on an open track? Yes. It's not hard.

If say, someone was a national points champion runner up for multiple years in  SCCA T1 driving Vette's against Vipers, 360s and 430s, and setting course records in qualifying on multiple tracks that have stood for 5+ years, I think they could qualify for the grid after a week of practice. Getting pole or winning the race is a whole 'nother ball game.

I did the simulator at the Hall of Fame. I spent more time going sideways and into the wall than in a straight line. So I voted NO. I could only imagine what a real crash would feel like

Also, I don't think people appreciate the fine line between grip and flight those cars ride at 200 mph. They aren't all wing and rubber like the science project cars.

You assume that there are no pro drivers that are members.
I was told while I was trying to start a career in the sport that there maybe 20 "Jeff Gordon's" vying for a seat but only one will get it.
Just the opposite, what if a "Jeff Gordon" started his Cup career with let's say MWR, how many championships and offers to drive would he have now?

Everybody's a hero at  keyboard.
It's all different running flat out towards turns one and two at Bridgehampton.

I race MX bikes...and do well
I race Karts...and do well
I race my cars on the street...and do well

I am sure I could race a nascar stock car, I don't think I would get top 10 for the first few races...but after I got the hang of it I am sure I would be up with the leaders.

ETA: I don't know if I could do F1 though, that seems pretty hard.

Nascar requires little skill. Sure i can make a left hand turn for hours.
F1 racing , on the other hand, requries massive skill and you have to be in great shape mentally and physicaly to endure all the twists and turns your going to have to make on the track.
Look at the nascar drivers compared to the F1 drivers. Most Nascar drivers are fat and out of shape. How many Fat F1 drivers do you see?
How many Nascar drivers have to remember each turn and where to hit the Apex? Hmmmm, none! Because all they have to do is make a Left Hand Turn!

Nascar is not racing IMHO, sorry guys

Bingo! Wrapped in it.

We race each NASCAR track, practice like they do, run the full thing.

After 3 hours the mind starts playing tricks on you.
