Sounds like this guy : Eventually, Nate said, they caught up to the bear where it had bedded in a creek bed. For reasons as yet unclear, Wes then decided to take photographs of the animal instead of shoot it.

"He took out his camera to take a picture," Nate said. "He had his rifle on his back."

This.  Accurate, light as a .22LR and I can fit more ammo in a pocket than a larger caliber.  I can't see farther than 100 yards nowadays anyway and the rifle groups well at that distance.

Not sure if serious..

but incase you are, you're god damn right I'm a city boy. I didn't grow up in the woods trapping small game and stalking elk.Which means I need every advantage I have in keeping myself fed. As I said I feel like starving is more a threat to me than bears. And although it's not ideal a 22 mag is still better than a sharp stick or starving.

You think starving is more of a threat than the bears.

What I don't think you understand is that you do not decide how much of a threat the bears are.  The bears decide.

WOW!

Based on the responses so far, I think we have narrowed down 2 bolt action rifles ARFCOM members would trust their life with:

  • Remington Model 700 in .300 win mag or .308

  • Winchester Model 70 in either 30-06, 300 win mag or .375 HH.............no matter the caliber, it is still a model 70!

Honorable mention to those that would trust their lives to the .22LR if stranded in the Alaskan Bush (serious, not being a dick about it!), I bet a average cargo pocket would hold damn near a 1000 rounds!
Not necessarily in that order!

Who needs a custom rifle when for $1200 this comes with everything you need and has the best trigger of any production rifle. It also shoots very small groups but I can't shoot it from the bench because my neck is so fucked up.

I didn't mention a Garand but there is nothing wrong with that choice. About a hundred years ago a Judge moved to Juneau and started hunting bears. At the time he used a 35 Remington semi auto. When he got his hands a a Garand in the late 30's he was totally impressed and never used anything else.

He got so scared on Kodiak Island that he never went back and never told anyone what happened. This is totally unusual cause this guy had major balls, some of his bear stories were pretty hairy.

as goofy as they are, for this situation I'd go with a stainless steel Ruger Gunsite scout in .308 with a 2-7x scope on it

if the scope is broken you still have irons, also the rifle is stainless steel, plus .308 is a great all around caliber

a Ruger 77/357 or 77/44 .357mag or .44mag bolt gun would be handy in that situation as well
