The Russians are looking more modernized. New digital flora uniforms, Sposn vests, 2 different styles of helmets, and new body armor.

I miss the old style vest which was way too big for the average person and the motorcycle style helmets like the Sphera.  Also, did they run out of the blue izolenta tape?

Makes you wonder how we would fare in a conflict against a modern nation. A good friend of mine who is with the 101st, has stated that in their officer level training sessions, an opponent with "modern" capability would create a unique set of challenges as compared to our current training tempo.

He commands a heavy weapons unit, and they have reverted back to training against armor and columns vs current afghan/Iraq style mission sets.

I for one think we would kick ass and take names unfortunately there would be a steep learning curve though. Going from gorilla type fighting to actual force on force would be a bit of a change. I wouldnt be surprised if S.F weren't already on the ground

I think our arrogance of military superiority would be severely tested. In a soldier vs soldier battle, I think the Russians would own us. Perhaps we would prevail in terms of technology based weaponry, but even then I'm not so sure. I think that as Americans we have been indoctrinated to believe that we are superior to all others to a fault. In reality, I think there are equally equipped soldiers throughout the world who aren't spoiled to their X box's and other luxuries who would wipe the globe with our soft asses. Our politicians should take note and tread upon these matters accordingly.

I respectfully don't agree unless your talking about the untrained american teenage going to war. Now politicians going to war with the troops should have already been in place. Those fat fuckers wouldn't be near as jumpy to do half the shit they vote on if they had to get there hands dirty

Who do you think we send into war? Its our untrained teenaged kids who are less disciplined/motivated than this current "enemy". They may hold their own against a bunch of illiterate goat farmers in the middle east but I believe our military is sub standard when compared to that of an organized and well equipped outfit like what the Russians have. Sorry to say it, but I stand by my assessment. The Russians have their shit together more than or ragtag bunch.

This is quite true. Still... Its not the NCO's who fight the battle. Its the pimple faced teenagers. In that case, I'd place my bets on the side that provides marksmanship/military training to their high school kids over the side that gives their kids an IPad and expects them to raise themselves.

you ever serve? The commissioned officers give the orders, NCOs make it happen. So, yes, they do fight the battles.

And what do you base this "assessment" off of? Have you ever directly trained with Russian soldiers? I have, and while they're definitely no slouches, to say that they have their "shit together" is laughable.

ETA: I'll leave it at that so as not to muck up the thread any further.

Russia is also geographically in Europe. It straddles both continents. To some it comes as a surprise because we don't see far eastern Russia represented very often in our media.

In terms of loadout and weapons, it would appear that what we're seeing is a mix of Naval Infantry from Sevastopol, airborne VDV (possibly 7th VDV division) and Spetsnaz.  All would be expected to be equipped and trained better then average motor riflemen.

Pretty sure we've seen:

4x24 PSO on the long rifles.
Obzor 1P63's on some of the better equipped Russian AK's
Maybe a couple of Rakurs too.
