I am only used to normal handguards. How hot will it get for hands (C-grip) at the top with heat radiating from the barrel that goes vertical? I would believe more heat is radiated vertically than in all directions, because air will be expanding and causing small currents to keep heat moving vertically.  What kind of firing would be needed to make it uncomfortable for bare hands? I don't know how much extra heat goes to the top, but a normal handguard would absorb some of that, and transmit it through the rest of the handguard.  This version of course, has much less metal on the top.  Would heat really only be a concern for where the gas block in placed?

And how soon for distributors to get the 15 inch versions? I prefer to order through local gun shop, and they work through MI distributors.

Hey MI people.  I got a Gen 2 SS rail to put on a beater gun.  I sent it to a friend of mine to put together.  He works in this industry so I can't say any more about him.. But he was really impressed that handguard. Right on spec and he mentions a couple big names that are not.  Engineering was great and so was price.  In contrast,  there is a big name keymod hand guard that he recently messed with and called a POS (not one mentioned in this thread).... So anyway I expect this new one is going to be a real winner.

Wondering about the 15" as well.  Also curious if there are plans to bring this design to the .308 frame?

Thanks, awesome rail yet again!

SLR's handguards have the same ID, so I'm sure it'll work.

So will this work behind my PRI front sight gas block combo on my 20" or not? Its at rifle length gas and there is no hand guard cap. I want to buy one of these but need to know.  12.6" sounds a little long.

I would really like to see one in 9.5"/10" to go over my 10.5" barrel. It would pair up real nice with my MI-PBT too.

Wow, these look great!  I'm also a little concerned with the possible heat issues.  There is so much ventilation and the handguard has a lot of surface area due to all the slots so it will probably dissipate heat quickly.  Still wondering though if MI will come out with some nice low profile heat guards that will lock straight into the Mlok without having to get a rail and then attach heat guards.  The ones they have now look nice, but I'm talking about smaller ones that pretty much just cover the rail aluminum and have form fitted lips that will wrap around the aluminum a bit bit still leave it open where the gaps are at the 45 degree angles.  I'm also highly interested in the 15in version.

Any thoughts as to when I might be able to find complete uppers from any vendor using your M-Lok handguards?
Link Posted: 7/17/2014 8:44:44 PM EDT
[#27]
OK - I guess that is a "no comment" about any vendors selling a complete MI M-lok upper.

Let me try this question - If I buy a complete upper with a SS12G2 or SSk12, can I swap it for an M-lok hand guard with a minimum amount of fuss? Does it use the same barrel nut?

That's one of the features I like about the Key Mod, M-Lok, and the Gen ll. All use the same barrel nut. Swap them as you want.
Also great if you are using a thread on suppressor, like my TAC65. Loosen two bolts, remove the hand guard and muzzle device, install suppressor, and slide the hand guard back on.

Any ETA on the 10" lightweight M-LOK or Keymod?

Also, are the Lightweight 12" rails actual length 12.3"?
