Since we've hit the topic of the McFarland one-piece gas ring again, I have a question. I originally built my "Mod 0" with the McFarland and had a lot of trouble with the bolt getting really tight in the carrier to the point where I was getting short-stroking A LOT. I switched to the traditional 3-piece rings and while it was *slightly* better,  I still was having trouble. I'd shoot a mag or two flawlessly and then, after those first couple of mags, I'd get short-stroking between almost every round after that. I'd pull the BCG and the bolt was CRAZY tight and CRAZY dirty in the carrier but there was no obvious cause. I'd clean and lube the BCG and we'd start the process all over again.

Now, fast forward 6 months or so and the weapon is running flawlessly despite the fact that I changed nothing. I just kept shooting it like that. If you look at the photo below you'll see my parts on the day of the build and you'll notice that my Colt FA carrier is SO USED that it doesn't have an ounce of finish on it but my bolt is much newer from a 6920 and, therefore, still has the Phosphate finish on it.

Here's my question:
Is it possible that my original problem was due to the differences in finish between the older bolt and the newer carrier and now, that've shot it quite a bit more that they've worked themselves into a harmonious relationship and I can now go back to the McFarland one-piece gas ring? I hate to mess with it now that it is reliable but I have to admit that I've got a little OCD when it comes to having it as close to clone spec as possible (minus the happy $witch).

**Edit: One other change I made since this pic below was that I switched to a PRI Gas Buster charging handle right around when the darn thing started to work flawlessly but I cannot image that that could have changed anything.

I know this has been posted before but I don't have a pic of the completed clone at the moment and I wanted you to see the BCG:

I doubt that it matters, but how sure are you that that is a Colt BCG? I have seen hundreds (if not more) of heavily used BCGs from various systems in the military and I don't think I've ever seen one look like that. From the photo, that carrier almost looks like an after market coated part. Like I said, I don't know that it would make a difference. I have no first hand experience with fancy coated bolts, but the even sheen on that looks suspect on the photo, at least when viewed on my IPad. I would love to know if the one piece gas ring had something to do with it.

Here's a closer pic. It is marked with a "C" and was sold to me by a reputable member here as a "Colt carrier" but I'll admit that I agree that the finish looks so even and feels so smooth that it almost feels coated in some way, like you said. The guy who sold it to me just said that the finish had worn off but I've never seen the finish wear away even from the nooks and crannies that don't get much wear. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what this carrier might be. Oh, and the bolt was a take-off from one of those half-circle 6920 BCGs. I kept the bolt, sold the semi carrier and bought this carrier.

That definitely looks coated. I am in the middle of my build and the other day I was specifically looking up fancy coated Colt bolts and came across some; that might be what you have there. I just don't see it causing your problem. My experience is mostly as an end user, but the issue you described (short stroking) is usually caused by not enough gas hitting the carrier. The level of fouling makes that sound improbable. What buffer weight are you using?

Here's a thought. I'm pretty sure the carrier is coated. If it has an after market coat "inside and out", maybe the tolerance has changed enough that the bolt is sitting too tight to function the way it was designed. Once again, strictly guessing. There are a lot of people on here who can give you a better answer.

I'd reconsider putting a brake on a 10" gun, it will be punishingly loud and concussive, 10.3 is the way to go, no issues with reliability. DD MK18 complete uppers can be found for a pretty nice price.

Thunder79,

Thanks for the reply. I agree that it looks coated now that I really inspect it.  Like you, I too have a hard time believing that it was worn to such a finish-free existence. However, there doesn't appear to be any coating inside the carrier where the bolt would be now that I'm looking at it. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback. The thing is working flawlessly now with any type of ammo so I'm thinking I should probably just leave it the hell alone and let the one-piece McFarland sit in the parts box for a while.

Oh, and you asked what buffer weight I was using:   I started with an H2 and when I was having the problems went to a standard buffer. That helped some. Once it just all of a sudden started working flawlessly, I switched back to the H2 (for "cloneliness") and it still works great with the heavier buffer so I'm back to running that full time.

.3 inches is inconsequential, and ammo variables will have a far bigger impact on operation or sound than three tenths of an inch.

Thanks again to those who responded to my initial questions. Hopefully the feedback will continue to roll in; although, I am familiar with how quick this thread changes direction.

With regard to the brake vs hider debate, it appears that AZRyan is correct. I know this is an ongoing debate and I am not known for my patience; therefore, I shot an email to the manufacturer and received the following message straight from the horses mouth:

"It will usually add about 10,000 rounds to the life of the can. However these numbers can vary depending on use."

Hopefully that helps someone else in the same predicament.

Interesting to see them quote as high as 10,000 rounds, but as said, with 556 SBRs in particular, a brake makes a HUGE difference in preserving the life of the can.

There's so much unburnt powder in 556 SBRs.

Yeah, it's pricey, but SAW has them.

Your clone cred will be unquestioned. Plus, would you pay the difference to have had the barrel all those months?

Yea i know they have them, but your right about 2 things; expensive and badass.....but I dont want either  I just want a DD or LMT barrel with FSP already installed
I'm not desperate though, I just wanted to whine  but I have every other part to build a MOD 0 except for the barrel, so its just annoying.

Getting my shopping list together for a CQBR, build, unsure if I want to buy a 6920 as a donor rifle and sell what I won't use, or build from scratch like I did with my M4A1. On that one I built the lower and bought a 921HB upper. Upper will have to be all Colt in this case, lower doesn't have to be, but it'll have some Colt parts (4 Pos buffer tube, H2 buffer etc), or just use my existing upper and SBR it. I've considered building a new lower as a Pistol until the stamp comes back. So many choices!

Yeah. Think I'm gonna cerakote one of my cans FDE eventually.

My two snail mailed cans (M4-2000 and Mini 4) won't be approved until summer though.

My eForm submitted SDN-6 should be approved within the month.

Not sure which one I want coated.

It would look a lot better with a FDE LMT SOPMOD stock or B5 Coyote SOPMOD and the Gear Sector SF  mount  comes in the same Patriot Brown as DD Rail color and a FDE grip . Check out Gear Sector web site for colors.

My eForm submitted SDN-6 should be approved within the month.

Not sure which one I want coated.

Just curious - you ever thought about painting the can FDE?

No I haven't. But you just gave me an idea.

Not to get off topic but when did your eForm go pending?  I've got a couple SOCOM can's I can't wait to get, I'm trying not to get my hopes up but really hoping the eForm will be faster.

To help stay on track....

Beautiful. Getting a shopping list, and L3's military pricing for the EXPS3-0 is very good. Wish I could afford to build now, especially with the potential Mk18 RIS II shortage.

To answer your question, it will be "pending" as soon as you submit.

My lower should be approved in a few weeks for my mk18 build and my can is still a couple months out.  I have been waiting to see if dsg or aim were going to put up some more complete uppers in the $800-900 range like we saw a few months ago.  If I dont see any deals like that soon, I will just build my own upper on DD's website so I can get it without the laser etched logo...

Ive been looking/waiting for months.

You haven't been able to track down a 10.3" DD barrel with FSP installed in all this time?

I'm sure I can help you out.

This is of interest to me because I'm looking at building up a Mod 0 myself.  I was thinking about getting a 6920 or similar carbine-gassed quality barrel and having it cut by ADCO for $60.  Seems like the path of least cost/resistance.  Not sure if I'll have the gas port opened or not, because I want to run it suppressed.
