Notice we did not attempt to retrieve them?

They deserted in the face of the enemy.
Shooting offense.

We do indeed leave them behind.
They made a choice.

It takes a seriously defective mind to decide that North Korea was a good choice to defect to. No loss with the departure of the dumbass.

Yes it does.  I almost felt sorry for him when he returned from duty to find that his wife was cheating on him, but his conduct after that destroyed what sympathy I might have had for him.

This thread is full of boys of privilege.

I'm not even 1/4 through the video and I understand why he did it.  Sure, it might have turned out differently than it had been going for him here, but an orphan's life is usually going to be tough, and some are deadly tough.

He found a way to live, and had to accept a political viewpoint to do it, but beyond that - he has lived a life in length that I doubt I'll have.

The guy finally found peace and a place as far away as he could get to.

I'll agree that being an orphan is tough.  The Captain of the USS Pueblo grew up in an orphanage.  However, he chose a radically different path from this traitor, though both suffered at the hands of the North Koreans.  The significant difference is one chose to suffer at the hands of the North Koreans.

Dresnok has painted himself into a corner.  He had to mouth words that he doesn't believe in order to live a sad existence.  He doesn't have any alternatives.

There's no strength in that - his existance only serves as a warning to others.

While I was stationed in West Germany during the 80's there was a US Army defector who repatriated after living in the East for decades. IIRC he claimed he defected cause he wrecked a vehicle and was afraid they would send him to the stockade . Then there was that kid that private who defected to be a snake handler or something  of that nature who had a change of heart.

Sounds like he forged some paperwork to get a 96 and got caught. I've met Sergeants Major who've done way worse. Hell in 2007 I had a platoon sergeant that made E5 three different times before he kept it long term.  In the 1960s you weren't even considered a real soldier without an Art 15. He's stupid enough to run away, through a mine field, to a foreign country her knew nothing about for a slap on the wrist offense. Sounds like North Korea was the one that got fucked on that deal, because that were stuck with the idiot.

As soon as he crossed into NK he was fucked.

All the other stuff before that comes down to telling your segeant that the captain wrote you out a pass, when he didn't, and then forging one and getting caught. It's mundane bullshit type of misconduct that happens everyday. Reduction one pay grade, 30 days restriction, deduct half pay, life goes on. It's not like he fucked a general's daughter or something serious. Certainly not worth being a pussy and running through a minefield into enemy territory to evade a court martial. Decisions that poor are only made by total idiots.

I've got Jenkins book "The Reluctant Communist". It's pretty good, talks about how Dresnok told their Nork guards about all their escape attempts and actually beat him on their orders. Made Dresnok look like a total piece of shit.

Jenkins was just a dumb drunk. He was leading a squad on a patrol, told them to hold up while he went to check out something down the hill and then went over the DMZ. Why? Because he was drunk and thought they would quickly hand him over to the Soviets and his release would be demanded and he would come home a hero. He said back then all he knew was that the Norks were Communists and all Communists took orders from Moscow. He was....not very bright. And he didn't come home a hero. Seems like he did get to come home for a month or so but then moved back to Japan with his wife. Oh yeah, the Norks "gave" them all wives, all kidnapped foreigners because they didn't want them to pollute the perfect Nork DNA with their American DNA.

At his court martial in November 2004, Jenkins appeared wearing the following awards on his Army uniform.

Army Good Conduct Medal
National Defense Service Medal
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
Korea Defense Service Medal
Army Service Ribbon
Overseas Service Ribbon
Jenkins further displayed the North Carolina Service Ribbon to denote his status as a Guardsman transferred to the Regular Army during his original tour in the 1950s and 60s. His one authorized Army badge is the Marksmanship Badge with Rifle bar.

A slightly shocking thing  about the "defectors" is that  none of them did so for  ideological reasons. A not so shocking thing is that between Abshier,Jenkins,Dresnok and most of those captured in Korea who elected not to return the common denominator is lack of education. IIRC a third of those captured and turned by propaganda had never attended, let alone finished, high school.

The real common denominators are disillusionment, unhappiness, and troubled childhoods.

Check out Dear Leader for more, about a relatively-high placed official defecting FROM the North:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IBYRQ18/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?ie=UTF8&btkr=1

This book is as amazingly revealing as it is terribly sapping of one's faith in humanity.  I was moved to tears more than once over learning about the horrible things the (relatively-innocent) North Koreans endure at the hands of that criminal government.  What happens to many of the women is particularly disturbing beyond mere words.

Anyone who willingly joins that side is shaking hands with the devil, and they deserve every bit of burn they'll get for it.

Every time I see something about North Korean life, it definitely holds my interest. How such a nation can exist with the general population being as blind as it is to the outside world always fascinates me... I wouldn't have guessed that any American in their right mind could even think about defecting to such a trash hole.... Obviously he was never in his right mind..

Thank you for posting this!

Socialism..... Man.... There it is though... "The gov will take care of me to my dying day". Yep. That sure leaves a broad definition of what "taking care of you" means...
