A buddy of mine has a situation with a guy who is claiming he's a vet with PTSD and is using that as an excuse to be a prick. He's making all kinds of wild claims about what he did in the service and my buddy wants to get to the truth.

Is there a way for a private citizen to legally verify that kind of information, or is that personal info that is protected?

Ask him for his DD214....or if you have his pertinent info do a FOIA for it.

Otherwise he is probably bullshitting.  I find that many of the fakers don't bullshit when other known real vets are not around as no one can call them on it.

PTSD would be a medical issue with related information being considered PHI, so no.

Being a prick, however, is usually public information,

THe problem with that is most civilians will look at a DD-214 and they might as well be reading hieroglyphics.

Better option, get his 214 and give it to us, it'll take about 4 seconds for the .mil forum to figure out if this guy is full of shit or not.

90% of people who say they have PTSD are pogues who never left the wire and are just scamming the system. The doorkickers with serious issues don't go around running their mouth about all the nasty shit they did.

Huge +1.  From what I have seen so far, the people with legitimate problems rarely talk about it.  Which only makes it worse .  The asshole advertising it are typically the ones trying to capitalize on it.

Not the only way to verify.....especially for those who got the tank while still active and didn't have a DD214 yet.

Point to a floor buffer and tell him to get busy.

If you end up with a nice shiny floor, don't play against him in spades if money is involved.

Why would he be asking you?  Do you do this sort of thing often?  Are you out there "white knighting" civilians that are being abused by vets on a regular basis?

If the guy's a poser then fine, go after him.  But....If he's not, and you do go after him...Well, that's on you.  Good luck.

Second, always reject an invitation to drama.  What possible incentive is there to get involved in this?

It isn't like a PTSD badge is going to be on his 214.

Ask to see his rating or code sheet if you're going to demand paperwork.

From what I gather, it's complicated...

My buddy is the guy's supervisor, but not his boss exactly. So the guy is some kind of dirt bag, he shows up drunk, doesn't do his job and my buddy is on the hook covering for him. Well, apparently, he started talking shit to the other people at work, saying my friend fucked this up and fucked that up...damaging his reputation with his peers. The guy apparently talks all kinds of shit about what he did in the war...he cut some guy's balls off to make him talk, he did this and that, whatever.

But apparently the boss won't fire the guy because he's a vet, so my friend wants to see if he can prove otherwise.

That right there proves it isn't me...my boss would never put me in charge of any one, and the one time they tried I weaseled out of it.

There are online databases where you can search for combat awards (CAR, PH, etc...).  If he doesn't have one he probably doesn't have PTSD.

I used to think it was a bunch of made up bullshit, but I've known a few guys that seemed a bit off after deploying.

I've also known chest-beaters that love any excuse to mention that they were military, or that they've deployed.

I think folks that actually have PTSD aren't the ones going around talking about it. YMMV.

You certainly won't be able to get his medical records to look for a PTSD diagnosis, but you can absolutely FOIA his DD214.  Once you get it, if you see zero deployments, or he has a job that would never see combat, so even if he did deploy he was guaranteed to have stayed on base, you'll know he's FOS.

The boss or HR should have confirmed he was a vet on hiring.  If anybody (vet or not) has substance issues and is treating, getting rid of them can be a problem.  ADA laws etc.  BUT, they need to sit him down, counsel on deficiencies, document problems and let HR and Management.  If he is a Vet and is having problems, local Vets services organizations can help in confirming status, if he is a poser, they will find out.    We just let a disabled vet go, he started coming to work drunk, he got referred to a variety of assistance points, and people tried to help cover for him, but he got dangerous to be around.  There is no good reason to be drunk at work.

Ask him what he thinks of Army (insert branch here) wives.  If he says "the show?"  He's probably lying.

If he says "99% are fat whores who bang some dude once their husband deploys."  He may be legit.

Follow up with: "what do you think of the FRG?"

If his response is positive, he's probably lying.  But, if his response is negative and he has a negative view of the wives, then I wouldn't question him further.
