Some ppl are telling me its a rat snake but with the disclaimer they dont really know what they are talking about.  I look at pics of rat snake and dont see it.  Id have thought it was a rattlesnake by the pattern but theres no rattle at the end.  head is def bigger than the body.

OP. Did you stage the picture? Or is that your pet?

I only ask because the 7" garter snake that breached my castle the other day got dealt with impunity.

I'm not saying that you don't know jack about snakes, but...

You don't know jack about snakes!!

J/K!!

That is a harmless(unless it bigger and you piss it off before trying to pick it up), extremely good snake to have on your property.

Unless, of course, you are a mouse.

However, having found the snake also means that you have mice. The good thing is that the snakes are TCB..

It's definitely not poisonous, the head is shaped wrong.  Most venomous snakes have triangular shaped heads (rattlesnake, copperhead, cotton mouth), it's not universally true (coral snake) but it's a good indicator.

Not a pet and not sure how it got in.  For sure its a baby. The splotchy pattern made me think it looked like a rattler but that was easy to rule out asvthere was no rattler.  But this thing is very aggresive striking at anything that moves close to it.

Yeah, my cat occasionally gets a mouse.  Since arfcom has given me the thumbs up ill deposit him in my muscadine vines. Thanks all

Eta. Jeez guys i just had to reread my own op to see if i was asking what do do with the rattlesnake i found wtf

Pattern looks a lot like my cornsnake.

Without seeing the under belly, I'm saying either a cornsnake or a ratsnake.

FYI, baby rattlers are born with just a button, which can be hard to see and does not not make a sound.

Yes it is.  Eyes and tail tell the story.  Cell phone pic does not show the vertical pupils.  Bastard stunk to high heaven also.

That color pattern is nothing like any rattlesnake I've ever seen, even without the head shape being wrong.  Every rattlesnake I've seen has a more geometric pattern down their spine, not splotches.

Very thick and blunt with just a small point section.  Here is a few more of my encounters in just the past few weeks.  Hate these things.

Around here they range in color from almost solid black to brown with gold bands to everything in between.  Our camping neighbors dog had just been bitten and rushed to the vet 2 days before about 100 feet from where this snake was.

Tail tapering helps in distinguishing gender, but does not lend itself to determing species or genus.
The last two pics do appear to be Akistrodon, the original pic appears to be Nerodia.

Water snakes have round pupils.  Trust me this snake did not!!!  I got a little too close for comfort just getting the pic and he-she was extremely pissed at that point.
