As of yesterday I have these random hyperlinks being created within all ARFCOM threads.  Ads appear from the right side of the screen and cannot be removed.  Popups come at me on other sites saying that I have a virus, click here for help (obviously fake).

I am a complacent dumbass who has allowed my 6 1/2 year laptop to become vulnerable.  Now I cam paying the price.  I want to smash this thing into a million pieces and replace it, but in the meantime, is there anything I can do about this?

Download malwarebytes

Run it from safe mode.

Good luck.

Did you go to add/remove program and see if anything is showing up as being recently installed?

Also, I would press ctrl, alt, delete and see if any programs are running that don't usually run.  Then you could google the name of that and there will probably be a walk through to remove it.

I did this, and removed what I thought was the offending program.  It did not work.  Windows task manager reveals nothing.

Backup your stuff, format the hard drive, and start from scratch.

Upgrade to Windows 7 or 8, or switch to Linux.

As suggested before, download and run Malwarebytes in safe mode.

Or do one of these: http://www.malwarehelp.org/anti-malware-bootable-rescue-cd-dvd-download.html

Start with BitDefender, Avira, or AVG.

The same thing happened to me about a week ago except I'm on a Mac.  I downloaded a program called TSM Adware Removal Tool and it fixed the problem in seconds.

reboot in safemode and do a system restore to a day or so before you were infected. You wont lose any docs etc. if successful, go out to ninite.com and download malwarebytes and maybe a secondary scanner.

Just what is it with the handful of Linux lovers. I don't know anything about it, but I do know marketing and business. If it is/was such a great OS the market would have readily adopted it. They could have mimicked Windows strategies and let the two systems fight it out for supremacy. I have heard all about how Linux is SUCH A GREAT SYSTEM! If so, how come such a piss poor marketshare. Just curious.
