Any way to tell how much weight any of these quads can carry?

I'd like to get one to mount my GoPro under, so would be looking for the cheapest way of doing that to see if it is something I then want to get into and spend a ton of cash on.

I kind of wished I had never clicked on this thread.  I already have too many expensive hobbies but  this intrigues me enough that I may have to start a new hobby.I had been thinking about hooking my go pro to a kite but this is a better idea.

I bought the $99 Heli-Max 1SQ this week and I'm so glad that I didn't start with a $500-$600 Blade 350/Phantom.

There's a wee bit of a learning curve and gravity being what it is the copter can take a beating. I treed my quadcopter about 30 feet up in one of my trees, I've also put it on the roof (and flew it off!) and bounced it off lots of stuff. After about 60 minutes of flying I'm getting good enough that I can hover and make the thing dance around a bit. I'm not yet to the point where I can race it round. Once I'm there I figure I can drop the bucks on a better platform.

Just got done reading all 10 pages...damn...now I want one of these.

What is a good starter quad? Is it like many of my other hobbies where it makes more sense to skip the "beginner" quality gear and move straight to something better?

I was looking at the Blade Nano. Are these things worth a damn or will they just frustrate me?

I believe I did the exact same thing as you Paul.   I purchased the 1SQ(I think I posted about it in this thread) and it was a steep learning curve.  I loved flying it though so I purchased the Phantom.   Anything that uses a GPS function is so much easier to fly on that I was still crashing the 1SQ very often and picked up the Phantom and did not have any crashes for a bit.   The cheap ones pretty much just get you hooked like an addict.

I got my FPV gear installed this last weekend but could not fly it due to weather.   Looking forward to this weekend.  The video through the Fat Shark goggles is a lot clearer then I expected.   I hovered it in the house to function check everything.

I'm thinking of building a TBS Discovery quad next.

Can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to the  Naza V2 over the DJI NAZA Lite + GPS.   It seems that the Lite with GPS does what I want it to do.  It has stabilization, RTH, and different operations modes(IOC, etc.).

Am I missing anything I might regret later on?

What kind of flight times are you getting with the TBS?  Looks interesting and what gimbal is  that on the front?
View Quote

I am getting about 10 minutes with the 4000mAh battery.
Gimbal is a Beholder 2 axis that is "modded" to fit on the front. Since it is hard mounted to the frame I am getting some jello. Working on a solution to isolate it so the video is as good as what I get from my Hex.

The Lite can not use the DJI IOsd and you can not do the gimbal control with it so no Zenmuse. That said there are aftermarket gimbals and OSD.
I recently switched from the Lite to V2 since I do photography and needed the extra stability (V2 is a bit more stable in the air and easier take offs)

The other thing is the Lite does not have firmware that you can update.

The Lite is still a great flight controller

I am keeping my fingers crossed the Lite will do the job.  I purchased 2 with GPS for about what one V2 would cost to use in my Aquacopter and my LiftoffUAV waterproof quads.  Again if or when these quad frames ever arrive.

$16 for a remote control helicopter!?

Something tells me this will be the most expensive $16 I've ever spent.  I'm already off looking at flight control suites, and thinking about the Raspberry Pi I have in the box next to the couch, and how Adafruit takes Bitcoin now.

Got my FPV set up on my phantom last week and finally got to fly it today.   Had a lot of wind but everything went well.   Really opens up a new world with flying these things.

For those who want to see the range of the stock phantom this will give you a decent idea.  I was flying in GPS mode since it was my first time flying FPV so the video sucks but you get an idea.  I set it down really hard at the end.   besides getting soaking wet everything was fine.

I feel like an idiot now.

I ordered a Syma S107G - but got plastic-bodied off-brand junk.  The worst part was that I didn't notice at first...

I was so excited to get it that I charged it and flew it several times before realizing that it didn't match the description. Then I noticed that the box didn't have a name brand on it, and the remote control didn't look like the ones on the YouTube videos I was watching.

This is after I've flown it for an hour, and my 5-year-old slammed it into the ceiling so hard that the inner shaft was knocked completely off the gears - and I tore it all the way down and repaired it by modifying the bushings on the shaft.

Amazon is making it right, so no worries there. I just feel like I clicked on a link in an email advertising Viagra or something :(

Took a little trip to the range with the Phantom to see how it would do since my Nephew is getting married next weekend and one of his wishes was to take all his Groomsmen and a few friends shooting before the wedding. I told him I would take him to my range and try to get some great video of the event for future memories.
Todays trip was a success as there were zero glitches with the Phantom or either camera. Hopefully my other Phantom and a camera gimbal arrive tomorrow so I can test them before the event.

I am cross posting this from my thread.

I am impressed with your ability to build and buy. You must have a store nearby to buy this stuff?

My process is way slower, I build, and without fail will have forgotten to buy some critical part and will then order that part from China...Two weeks later the new gear will arrive and while installing that I'll find out I need something else that I neglected to see. Repeat, repeat. ....

No problems with the 433 right next to the VidRx antenna?

Got the carbon fiber parts and batts from Hobbyking with Swisspost takes 3 weeks. The tubes are good quality. I got some stuff like motors from multirotorsuperstore.com out of California, good guys. I sometimes order from Rctimer, got here in 1 week even during the Chinese New Year! amazing.
My vTX is at 1258mhz, doesn't interfere with the Flytron Openlrs or vice versa. No glitches or anything and no video interference. If you are on 1280 like most guys, you might hit some interference on your video from harmonic 1299 depending on your rcTX. I am more worried about the gopro, it leaks 433 but I haven't tested it yet. I might have to wrap it in shield. OpenLRS frequency hops pretty well though. A Mobius cam is better suited.
This thing is a god damn beast. SOOO much power on these motors. And even more on 6" props, but haven't flew those yet.
Its a clone of a "Blackout mini-h quad". but lighter and with vibration isolation. So far I love this thing, the best FPV quad ever!
eta: the motor mounts are garbage, hobbyking junk. Broke 3 today.....

I have 3 FPV folding antenna towers for sale and 2 kits. I made a few for some guys at RCgroups, I'll give you 20% off what they got.
You can mount it to your tripod or a car window mount.

$50 shipped

$30 shipped for the kit (minus the monopod which you can buy on Amazon for $15-20)

eta: the motor mounts are garbage, hobbyking junk. Broke 3 today.....

Nice build!  Those sunnysky motors have plenty of power behind them for these little quads.  Like you said, if you start swinging 6", you'll really be taking off!  I'm using them on one of my Blackout mini-h builds and love them.  The nooks and crannies you can shoot through with these little guys is tons of fun.

You'll find the GoPro does leak plenty of noise in the 433, but I haven't found it to be a problem for control.  Now it will give you trouble getting a GPS lock I've found.  As you suspect, the mobius isn't as bad but still isn't great.

Here's some fun I had yesterday.

Is there a place for new guys who have no idea what all this nomenclature means to learn? I want to build one for when I am hunting and scouting out in front of me a ways.

Well I ended up finding a DJI 450 kit on amazon that I got.

I still need a radio and receiver.  I was looking at a turnigy 9xr.  I loaded everything up on the hobby king website, but the $35 on a 70 dollar order hurts.

Any suggestions?  For where to buy an rx, tx, and batteries?  What about other replacement parts like props, arms, and motors?

The closest hobby shop to me basically didn't have any quad parts in stock.

Make sure you are ordering from the US website not the international.  That is why the shipping is so high.
