Duracoat and Ceracoat would change the dimensions of the follower. Might make it stick in the mag causing feed issues.

Might be a dumb question, is the color you see in liquid form pretty consistent with how the end product will turn out? Assuming you have it dipped for a good 20-30 minutes..

I understand a lighter base produces the best results... trying to match my B5 FDE stock closer to a Magpul FDE because the puke green hue bothers the hell out of me.

I know that this particular thread is revisited from time to time...does anyone have a formula for a good pink that can be measured by measuring spoons or similar common measuring devices? I tried one based off of an spent .45 shell, but it didn't come out...in fact it didn't show up.

Looking to do some Pmags in pink....

Thanks for any help.

These are my first attempts at dyeing some mags. I heated the water to steaming but not boiling and I used painter's tape.

EDIT: The reason they would not dye is becuase according to Magpul's website the followers are Non-hygroscopic.

Duracoat or Ceracoat???

Black Rit Dye. Didn't work one bit.

Using what polymer base?

Only thing lighter than FDE is UDE

I'm trying to get my non-Magpul products to match closely with Magpul's FDE. More specifically, my B5 sopmod stock and Tangodown stubby grip -- both in their respective versions of FDE.

After talking to them on the phone, I had Kydex send me several sample sheets to try out. One of the big selling points of Kydex is its stain resistance. I got very minimal results using Rit Dye. A harsher chemical dye might do better.

I've never tried grey on normal FDE, but I think you would get better results using Larue UDE than normal FDE if you're going for grey. Thats my ¢2.

Can someone reccommend a type and brand of tape that they know works really well. I want to make my STR stock match the rest of my rifle, but I cannot afford to have the tape come off in the water on a $100 stock

I use Scotch brand 35 vinyl electrical tape. It comes in many colors and is readily available at home stores.

The big drawback is it is only 3/4 in wide. But if you are careful you can butt two pieces up next to each other. I use a thin strip of a different color to tape over all of my butted joints. That is what I did for all of my projects.

This also works on the troy battle mags. Went from fde to black. Base plates wouldn't take the dye, so had to paint them.

According to the info In this thread:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1421522_Rit_Changed_Formula__Scarlet_Red_Substitue_.html

Rit changed the formula for all of their dyes about six months ago and the new formula will not absorb into plastic/polymer.

Has anyone encountered this problem with their pmags and the new dye?

Thanks

I'm curious, as there appears to be a number of recent dye jobs that must have used the supposed new formula...or one would think.

This is the best I have... (I dont have access to this rifle for a few months now)

There is a bunch of white residue from the tape along the edges of the shapes. That will come off by just rubbing it but I didn't do that before taking the picture.
