For those complaining about the combat capability of three DDGs and one CG, those four ships are carrying a total of 410 Mk41 VLS cells. That's a lot of missiles. And you can carry 4 Sea Sparrows to a cell.
The CG will also have 8 Harpoons. |

It was never designed or envisioned for that role. It just so happens (thanks McD engineers!) that it was very capable once they figured out how to fly it. Moreover, the crews were trained to be interceptor pilots, not ACM specialists. TOPGUN fixed that. TC P.S.--However, NAVAIR did demand the F-14 come with a gun...jus'sayin'.
