Have to ask: While I realize that perspective can be difficult to rationalize in pictures, the cruiser and the destroyer look to be about the same size. What is the difference? Destroyer Length:505 ft (154 m) Beam:66 ft (20 m) Draft:30.5 ft (9.3 m) Cruiser Length:567 feet (173 m) Beam:55 feet (16.8 meters) Draft:34 feet (10.2 meters) Both nearly identical in displacement/tonnage Destroyer Weapons and Combat System are optimized for ASW, Cruisers for AAW There is little to no difference between the combat systems on a DDG-51 and a CG-47. The only difference is what Mod the combat system is. The Marks are the same. |

I happen to know somebody that was an a Belknap class "cruiser" that got orders to go in to the Persian Gulf in a time of rising tensions, with one 5" gun, terrier missiles and small arms. No 3" guns, no 50s and no 20's. Needless to say there were some scenarios we were a little concerned about, because we were slated to operate as PIRAZ away from the Carrier Group. View Quote Sounds like when they took the guns off fighters like the Phantom II because they thought missiles could take care of any situation. |

For those complaining about the combat capability of three DDGs and one CG, those four ships are carrying a total of 410 Mk41 VLS cells. That's a lot of missiles. And you can carry 4 Sea Sparrows to a cell.
The CG will also have 8 Harpoons. |

Top Gun is a Tom Cruise 80s flick that had nothing to do with the USN's superior kill ratio in Vietnam. View Quote I bash the early F-4's for not having a gun as much as anyone but H46 nailed it. More specifically, it's the Navy taking what was intended to be a fleet defense interceptor and putting into an environment where (due to the oppressive DC-driven ROE's) it had to engage in close in, visual ACM. It was never designed or envisioned for that role. It just so happens (thanks McD engineers!) that it was very capable once they figured out how to fly it. Moreover, the crews were trained to be interceptor pilots, not ACM specialists. TOPGUN fixed that. TC P.S.--However, NAVAIR did demand the F-14 come with a gun...jus'sayin'. |
