I thought that that was basically not possible. In the practical sense, anyway. Given enough time and money, there are few impossible things.

I have seen 1 or 2 folks turn a standard FSB into a clamp-on by drilling, tapping, then splitting the bottom portion.

For all of the trouble either way, I recommend just buying a new barrel and calling the old one the start of a new build

I've thought about these but also don't really trust them staying put.

They stay put just as good as any other gas block. I have used them on builds where I shaved the FSB like yours then later changed my mind. Went on without a hitch. and have stayed on for a few 1,000 rounds..

plante:  I reached out to Steve @ ADCO about this issue, recently.   I have a BCM 14.5 that he is shortening to 10.3 for a CQBR BK1.  I had shaved the FSB on this a couple of years ago.  He said he can install a brand new FSB with taper pins, and I would not even notice the original pin holes.
Apparently "What happens under the FSB, stays under the FSB"

I've been slowly expanding my horizons, I try to stick away from the retro forum. That one will cost me too much money, and seems like if it isn't 100% correct you get a flogging. But at same time, developed a love for the A1 style

You are correct about the retro forum costing you money.

The flogging? I don't know... it's more like guidance.

True, and while I appreciate the guidance I dont always have the money or tools to do a 80% as much as I would love to. One day I will, but for now my clones will have A2 lowers, but then when I transition to am A1 style, I'll have a surplus of A2 lowers I'll have to build. A viscious cycle.

Anyways, I'll be posting pics tomorrow got behind today and didn't finish my lower but my parts from boywomder are coming in. Then its.just installing the barrel, and getting a BCG. Coming together nicely, still waiting on my package from zahal but did show it shipped last weel

Finally got my stuff from Zahal,  41 days later.  I plan on getting a Bushmaster lower to finish it off but for now it wears an Aero(will be installing a block and going on a 9mmA2 upper I have in progress).

Fuck you Hussein Obama!

My new to me mainly built Colt parts Model 653 IDF battle rifle. Long story, just installed barrel this morning. Range report hopefully this evening. Going to be a great truck/traveling companion.

Hit the range this afternoon with this new to me IDF clone Colt Model 653. Colt C H M16A1 upper with proper C marker M16 BCG. A2 ejection port cover and aftermarket M16A1 FA. M16 flat slip ring, LSO 6 hole hand guards, New Colt AR6920 16" lightweight profile barrel 1/7 (cut, pinned/welded to 16" OAL). M16A2 PWA Commando (Pre-ban) lower with all Colt LPG. M16A1 pistol grip. Colt fiberlite stock w/NoDak spud CAR tube, H2 buffer. Zahol sling and front hand guard band.

Fired almost 150 rounds of trouble free shooting this afternoon. Used IMI M193, Privi Partisan M193, and LC M193 55gr ammo. No hic cups or FTF,FTE etc. I'm very happy with this set up.

This is one that came from two.

A PWA kit on a preban PWA lower was one and a PSA lower/DTI upper was the other.

The PWA lower was sold to a ban state and the barrel was sold elsewhere - I had plans for the A1 upper.  The DTI upper sold from the PSA/DTI carbine.  Cash in - $825

The funds were then put together to purchase:
-non-N1 CAR stock
-PSA H-buffer
-Colt LW 16" barrel
-Proctor sling
-Spikes Melonite gas tube

Additional parts::
-BCM standard CH and flash-hider borrowed from an extra SBR upper that's living in a box
-delta ring, weld spring and snap ring from the extras box
-off-brand M4 handguards with Streamlight mount from the extras box
-Colt FA BCG from the extras box

I've only got 120 through it since Thursday but it's a runner.

So the two questionable carbines were turned into one good one and few hundred extra dollars to boot.

I have what I think is an Aimpoint gooseneck mount in my extras box - are there any acceptable optics that can be used on it and it still be considered KISS?  If not, is there a good optic to use on the gooseneck to at least get it considered for Retro?

After finally talking about it for awhile I finally completed my build, just waiting on my CH and BCG to get in.  Got my order from Zahal in less than 3 weeks, very happy with it but may end up switching out the sling later on since I'm more of a two point style sling guy than one point but figured I'd give it a try.  I can't wait to get this out to the range and test her out, super light and fits like a glove.  Specs are:
-DPMS A1/C7 upper
-PSA Afghan blem lower
-DPMS lpk
-A1 pistol grip, A1 flash hider, and slip ring (thanks to Boywonder!)
-Tear Drop FA (thanks to PIF Hal143)
-Handguard wraps and sling from Zahal
-PSA premium BCG
-regular CH

Am planning on switching out the A1 aperture with an A2 that's on order

I've changed it and changed it and changed it.... Started out as a CMMG 300 blackout, I just like the way the rifles look..... Had a Quad rail on it went back to standard handguards, then to a float tube and then back to standard handguards..... Like the smooth and simple way the basic rifle feels and handles....

CMMG lower with CMMG LPK
Fulton armory a2 stock buffer tube, buffer and buffer weight
Fire for Effect Upper (CMMG) 1:7 Chrome Lined Barrel with Parkerizing under the sight post and upper receiver
CMMG F marked Front sight
CMMG Bolt Carrier Group
Colt Carry Handle
Vietnam era sling

Do I count?

That's what I'm in process of doing as well, building a replica of the M4 carbine I carried minus a few upgrades ;)  thankfully got my PSA Afghan lower blem when they were $49.99 plus shipping

Recently changed my rifle up some.  Took my PSA Afghan blem lower and decided to use it on  M4 clone build of the rifle that I carried while in the Army (with a few upgrades that I wish I could have done when I was in).  Swapped it out for an Aero Precision lower that I had on a different build that I am changing up as well cause it matched the finish perfectly on the A1/C7 upper.  Going through some things, realized I had a SureFire 6P light that I had forgotten about.  Really digging the setup so far.  Pic to enjoy

Yep, I liked them so much I got 2 of them. One of them replaced a DD MK18 upper. These are more aptly ported, as accurate and have a bit better ballistics not to mention they cost less than half as much. I did keep the DD BCG  though.
