Looks like the length is closer to an H&R T223 magazine or an HK53 magazine.

You'll notice that the Nazi symbol is reversed and canted 45 degrees.  This is not an unimportant detail.  Buddhist symbols, representing the four paths, can be easy differentiated.

EDIT- Apparently according to wiki that's not entirely true (If you believe wikipedia).  Though their definition is probably a lot more accurate.  With the reversed versions also existing in buddhism with a different meaning and both meaning a different set of paths (or virtues) not associated necessarily with the four noble truths.  However, the Nazi symbol remains the only one that is canted 45 degrees, making it still easy to differentiate.

Maybe if it were a stubby, stunted growth A1 flash hider. That sucker is shorter than a
regular A1 unless it is just an effect of the lense on the camera.

I think it's just the image scan.  I've got the original photo and you can see the whole flash hider.  That was RT Pick One-Zero Bob Graham's CAR-15.  That guy was a lunatic; I have another photo of him with a longbow that he used once while his team was in contact in Cambodia.  He actually stood up and shot an NVA with a freaking arrow while his team broke into an IA drill.

Interesting that the Brits were still using three-prong FHs and triangular HGs in the Falklands.

Well if that pic was taken in the war then that was 1982 and we were still using triangle handguards as well.

Repost.  But none-the-less, that's One-Zero Ken Bowra with either RT Idaho or Sidewinder from CCN - your old AO if I'm not mistaken, Osprey.

After digging through some photos, I'm inclined to believe that is RT Sidewinder in 1972.  Bowra is the only American in the photo; when he was on Idaho, Frank Pulley was there until he took the One-Zero slot on RT Louisiana.  Then Idaho was selected to be one of the first RTs to be an all Vietnamese team.  That's Sidewinder in '72...

Do you have Jason Hardy's book on "SOG Team History and Insignia"?  Lt Bowra ran Idaho as 1-0 with Frank Pulley as the 1-1/2.  Together they ran the last Idaho team and this is in 1971.  You are right though on Bowra being the only American in early 72' on Sidewinder.  I know you RT Utah don't I?  You use to post back on PS.com didn't you?

Yeah, I have Hardy's book; that's part of the reason why I believe that to be a photo of Sidewinder.  Hardy would have used that photo if it was Idaho.  I rarely post on PS.com; mostly, I just research and read.

Negative; I'm still writing!  I've gone through a ton of editing over the past year, fixing the SPAF / Covey misconception and some other minor details.  I recently committed my main character to another 12-month tour at CCC, so I've got a LONG way to go...

Nice pic...  That PJ is A1C William Pitsenbarger, Medal of Honor recipient (though it took awhile to award it! Earned in '66 awarded posthumously in '00). A friend of mine was one of the infantryman that he helped save on that mission.

Awesome, thanks for the backstory. I just stumbled upon this while searching for 604 photos; didn't take time to read the important details.

It could just be the photo...but it looks like his early 604 has an Armalite magazine!

Very cool background story...I'm glad he finally received the Medal of Honor.

I have one of the BUAER flak vests that he's wearing.  Also have the matching "flak diaper" that goes with it.  Even have the original box.  Don't see many of those.
