C8 carbines have never had an M4 profile barrel that I've seen. What Colt Canada sells as the C8A2 has a profile unique to it, and is actually fatter forward of the FSB, though not to the extreme of the SFW. C8s had A1 profile barrels, C8A1s had A2 profile barrels. |

Great links and info! never seen those before. Thanks. |

I wonder what the profile is underneath their handguards. Those are cool.
The C8 should have a full A1 profile, that is lightweight under the HG too. Similarly, the C8A1 should have a full A2 profile, that is in the gov't profile of fatter forward of the FSB and lightweight under the HG. The SFW has a full-heavy profile like the Colt 921HB, but has a unique bulge forward of the FSB. I'm not sure what the profile for the from-factory Colt Canada C8A2 looks like. The Canadian service guns that have held that designation are more likely of an SFW type. |
I don't know if these would be considered "retro" any more than the A2 would, but interest in them seems to be on the rise. I, for one, would like to see more people doing Diemaco clones, especially considering the availability of the C7-style uppers.
Notice that for the SFW, Diemaco/Colt Canada opted for a 16 inch barrel rather than the 14.5" of the C8. All we need now is for someone to market the special sleeve to put on the front of a 16" LW barrel (although technically the SFW is heavy under the handguards). EDIT: Thatguy is right; an SFW clone would have a 16" HBAR barrel profile, with the above-mentioned grenade launcher adaptor sleeve installed behind the flash suppressor. A nice C8 clone would have a 14.5" LW barrel, although you'd be hard-pressed to find an actual Diemaco hammer-forged barrel. |

Osprey21,
where did you get the picture of the two Laotians with a fellow from the CIA in the middle? |

Can someone answer a quick question? A lot of the photos have guys in Vietnam wearing "boonie" hats that appear to have had the brim cut down. Is this a field modification or were the hats made like this?

Thanks osprey21, it must have been a popular field mod, I can't believe how many pictures show the cut down hats. They even got it right in Green Berets with John Wayne. Doc |

I'd like to put in 2c here, most of the ones shown here have been short brim boonies that were made in-country that way. |
True, lot's of in country tailored boonies almost look like beanies. Many shrunk up during water ops, rain, etc.
Some of the really neat ones have a single modded pocket on top for a pack of Cigs, or spare mag. Hal |

Dunno if this is a repost or not...
The photo is labeled "Delta Project" but I'm skeptical. I've never seen photos of SF, Rangers, LRRPs, or LRPs wearing steel pots out in the bush. That guy's a grunt with a full-stock XM. I wanna say E1, but the moderator isn't close enough to the FSB, so I'm going with E2. Now, I've never seen a grunt with an E2 before, so I don't know what the hell to think. |
Maybe Delta meaning Mekong Delta? Some kinda project in the delta region?
As opposed to SF Project Delta. Looks like a very early 30 rounder too. Hal |
I would think it depends on when it was taken and what exactly the situation was. There's a picture of two US Special Forces NCOs and their Montagnard RTO of 5th MSF showing them all wearing steel pots dated 1969 in a book I have. |
Were they in the field or profiling for the lens? What book is it just out of curiosity? I don't doubt some guys wore steel pots on occasion, but that chap is taking a map reading while in the field, not profiling for the camera. Although those do look like tigers and that is a BAR belt he's wearing with a recon knife taped upside down on his shoulder strap... |

I understand a lot of guys had their boonies cut down in theater. I have a Filson hat that is the absolute shit in a heavy rain - wide brim, tin cloth, really a personal umbrella. I wouldn't trade it for the world...but I noticed that my hearing was restricted by it. Makes me think the original reason was for better hearing, then it may have become 'the thing' as troops coming in learned from their predecessors. After several years, it might be like wearing a baseball cap backwards now is - no one remembers the real reason you might do that. (On a dirt bike, going fast, it makes sense.) Just a thought.
ETA: my boonies are all ancient, and a shorter brim than current, some design, some shrinkage, but not cut down to 1-1/2" or anything. I do fold my boonies and my Filson up at the rear to accomodate a pack. (looking up) Wish the boonies had a place in the inside crown to store reading glasses. |
"Who are you people, and where's my horse?" - George Carlin
Another reason why cut-down boonies were a favorite among recon guys was because the full-brimmed deals limited vision, especially where the fabric was folded and limp. Bad enough they could only see 30-40 meters through triple-canopy jungle, but they sure as hell didn't need anything else inhibiting their sight and depth perception.
