Hi SCPossum1,
You should change your handle to "DeerSlayer" Congrats on your recent hunting success. I have not made any chamber gauges to the new Spec-II standard. I have found that if you load to a C.O.L. of 2.26 everything fits the Spec-II standard. IF you or anybody else with the Spec-II chamber wants their old gauges modified or a Spec-II chamber gauge let me know. Let me know. |

Does anyone have the spec 2 with the newest loads and a 16" barrel? I'm thinking of building an ultra light (sub 6 lb sans glass) carbine and am curious about the ballistics.
Also, I just saw a video where hornady will be releasing in '17 a new 25-35 load with a flex tip. It didn't say what grain, but this just might be an ideal bullet if it is released as a reloading component. ETA: just checked hornady's site and it's a 110gr. The flex tip is what they use in their lever revolution line; these bullets are typically short and have a soft ballistic tip that flexes flat as to not detonate the primer of a round in front of the bullet in a tube magazine. I see potential here for our cat... Imagine loading long to compress the tip in the mag, then as the round feeds, the tip rebounds for a better BC. And since the 25-35 is ballistically similar to our cat, one can deduce that the bullet's expansion thresholds are within our velocity limitations. ETA 2: hell yeah. It WILL be offered as a component. Look at the details, .340 BC and expands down to 1600 fps. This has serious potential. |

nice on the FTX, by hornady.
may have to give it a go. forgot just how accurate my 25-223 is. shot it at 200yds, a nice 2" group, for me, that's really really good! |

SCPossium,
Nice shooting! Your work pretty much shows that the 25-223AR and get the job done out to 300 yrds. The JBM Ballistics program calculates that the 100 gn Hornady Spire point is going about 1983 fps and has about 873 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yrds. The only problem that I see is it seems that Hornady discontinued the 100 gn Hornady Spire point. |

Woods report:
The 25/223 gave up its second 300 yard deer this morning. I pulled the shot and put the bullet about 3" too high and she dropped right where she stood. We don't intentionally look for these long shots, but seems like lately they cross on a regular basis that far away at this stand. Nice to know fhe caliber and rifle can do it when you need to make those kind of shots. The best thing I did this year was to put a 6-24x50 vortex on the top. Kind of helps when you can see what you are shooting. . |

It definitely looks like there is still some expansion taking place. That's great.

Same thing I was thinking. A lot better expansion. The opening was at least a half dollar in size. This round is running at an average of 2600 fps. I haven't had the time to test some more loads since the gas port was opened up. This one ought to do more when the load is dialed in.
I was coming out of the woods today and saw a coyote standing across the field. Gueestimated at about 300 yds so I turned the turrets a +10 and let one fly off the back of the truck. No point in saying, but one less fawn killer. This round is accurate! |

Dropped a 200lb three by three muley last Saturday on McGregor Range.
300 yds with a clean pass through the heart and lungs, with a 87gr pill, forgot the charge, but was not a hot one. Heard the thwack and he ran about 15 yds and went belly up. Did not take pics, no camera. Quarter size hole in and out. Oh yeah, this is the wifes 16" gun, lol. Am now gathering parts to building my own. |

I have been watching this thread for years and I am always impressed to see the performance of the 25-223 on game. I am curious if anyone (sorry if I missed it in the tread) has used a T/C Encore or Contender? I understand the advantage of this is it fits in a an AR-15 magazine but I am considering finally playing with this round and with the Encore I can play cheap and I have been deer hunting with the single shot anyways (We can't deer hunt with a semi-auto here in PA --- may change soon we hope).
In the thread above is a photo of that 90gr Speer boat tail. I have had really great success with that bullet in the past with a 257 Roberts. Also worked well in a 25-06 but at 25-06 velocities it is a varmint only bullet. I do bet that will work well on deer at 25-223 velocities! |

I think hes over 3000fps. Def worth doing to smoke deer in PA. |

View Quote Hi Quarterbore, I have built two "single shot" AR uppers for myself. I just do not finish drilling the gas port. I leave enough of a "starter-hole" so that at a later time it is pretty easy to finish the gas port on a drill press. This set-up would be legal in Pennsylvania. You can get an assembled AR upper receiver for about $100, a plain jane handguard for ~$100, and a bolt/carrier group for for ~$100. With the SPEC-II chamber and SS mags., like the ASC mags., your reloads have a C.O.L. of about 2.3". In a 20-inch barrel with the SPEC-II chamber, 87gr. Speer and the 90gr. Sierra GK, get pretty close to 250 Savage performance. If you go with one of the 24-inch barrel and the SPEC-II chamber, you can match ore exceed 250 Savage performance. The best of all is when Pennsylvania changes it's hunting regulations, you will have an easy migration path to a semi-automatic :-) |

Working on brass today. I hope to have some loaded by the end of the weekend. Loaded around 25-30 - 100 grs Hot Core and 87 grs TNT rounds with RL-7. Also, I just received my Old Crow WTF case trimmer today. All I can say is my RCBS electric trimmer is going to be gathering some dust. This thing takes around 2 seconds and the case is done except for chamfering and deburring. Even with the 3 way cutter the Old Crow is a lot faster than the RCBS .

So you should trim your cases if the stretch 0.005" to 1.705". Typically, the reloading manuals that I have looked through suggest the you case 0.010" shorter than the spec. So the trim length is 1.690. I have trimmed some brass a bit short to 1.680 to 1.685. It usually stretches back out to about 1.69-ish or so and it still shoots fine. |

Hello gents.
Been studying 223 wildcats for a while and came across this thread. It got me to join; 1st post. Your 25-223AR Spec II is just what I've been pondering as a balance of bore size, case volume to long 100gr bullets, ease of case forming, etc. Kudos for all the cartridge and load development. Now to decide on a barrel length and see about getting one from 320pf. 20" seems like a good middle ground for mixed uses, from mule deer to p-dogs to the 500 yard steel buffalo at our club range. My goal is 100gr at 2700fps at the muzzle using a powder which isn't highly temperature sensitive. H322 is a candidate, but I wonder if a longer barrel would be needed, based on the posted H322 results. |
|

Hi Eyez,
Welcome! I am glad that you enjoyed reading the thread. HarperJt just got three barrels, two 14.5-inch medium weight barrels and one 24-inch "Alpine" profile barrel. We should be getting some results soon on how an lightweight 24" barrels runs. If you are looking for 2700 plus fps velocities with a 100 gr bullet, a 24-inch barrel will be the easiest route. With a 20-inch barrel, you probably can get 2700 fps with a few powders but you are going to be pushing the max. pressure. As indicated in this thread, you can get ~2600 fps out of a 16.5-inch barrel but given the case volume/bore area; you gain about 50 fps per 4-inches of barrel (~10-15 fps per inch of barrel). I hope this helpful. 320pf Originally Posted By Eyez:

Using a windowed mag (cut out the face of the mag at the top) 5 rounds stack and feed without issue. I am able to seat out to 2.36 and have some 115 bergers to try.
Also, I tested the Speer 100 btsp which has an excellent for caliber BC of .393. 24.5-25.0 of 2200 all shot 5 shot sub-MOA 100 yard groups. I haven't chronied it yet, but expect around 2700 based on the 100 Interlock experience with the same charge. Assuming 2700-2750 fps, with 200 yard zero it drops only 2.5 mils at 500 and is still above the expansion threshold of 1800 fps and hits with 740 ft/lbs. on paper, this is the best "long range" load so far. This will be my new hunting bullet and I'll be bringing it out this year for coues deer. |

I have some free brass to give away. I bought some lapua 223 and sized it, but for some reason the rim sticks up a tad in the case gauge and my die is maxed out. 60-70 pieces for free if someone wants to mess with them or I'm sure they would be fine in a bolt gun.
