Im not sure if this was posted on here or not and Im sorry if it was and its a double post but of not then

The 2009 Legislative session has begun, and the Ammunition Accountability Act is being introduced across the country. Below is a list of the states where legislation has already been introduced. Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, NJ, NY, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington.

The bill that is being pushed in 18 states (including Illinois and
Indiana) requires all ammunition to be encoded by the manufacture, a
data base of all ammunition sales. So they will know how much you buy
and what calibers. Nobody can sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009
unless the ammunition is coded.

Any privately held uncoded ammunition must be destroyed by July 1, 2011.
(Including hand-loaded ammo.)  They will also charge a .05 cent tax on
every round so every box of ammo you buy will go up at least $2.50 or
more! If they can deprive you of ammo they do not need to take your gun!

Here is the link that explains more about each state.

i believe this issue is proposed every year, but never goes anywhere because the company with the "encoding" tech is the one lobbying for this to pass.

Back on planet earth, it is pretty much impossible to enforce.  All a criminal has to do is grab a handful of "encoded" casings from a range or something, then scatter them all over the crime scene.  Multimillion dollars project = lol.

It's doubtful even the Dimwits are dumb enough to act on this ridiculous Bill. According to the NYSRPA political action guru the microstamping Bill is far more likely to be passed. The fact that both encoded ammo and microstamping are easily defeated in several ways won't stop these loons from introducing and possibly passing these Bills.

BILL NUMBER: S8541

SPONSOR: SCHNEIDERMAN

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the penal law, in relation to requiring semiautomatic
pistols manufactured or delivered to any licensed dealer in this state
to be capable of microstamping ammunition

"Requires all semiautomatic pistols to be equipped with a microscopic
array of characters that identify the make, model, and serial number of
the pistol on the firing pin, which would copy the characters onto the
cartridge case of discharged ammunition."

Ive read that the ammunition manufacturers oppose encoding and have threatened to cease supplying ammo to the law enforcement agencies of any state that passes such legislation.

Sorry for nitpicking, but this is a pet peeve:

"They will also charge a .05 cent tax on
every round so every box of ammo you buy will go up at least $2.50 or
more! "

.05 cents is 5/100 ths of a cent; i.e. one penny per 20 rounds.  The original author meant .05 dollars or 5 cents.

Also, the original statement that 'every box of ammo will go up $2.50 or more!" makes the implication that ammo is only available in boxes of 50 rounds or more...

Ammo has gone up way more than that without any new laws.

Factcheck.org has done a piece on this legislation and it can be seen at:

(not hot-linked on purpose)

Granted after the hatchet job they did on the NRA in support of Obama one has to take a pause on their research.  However, if you ignore what they have written and follow the links they have provided to outside references (content not controlled by them) one gets some pretty good information on this dimwitted legislation.

In the Kruger encoding Bill (S01177) introduced in 2007/2008 I don't think that will be much of problem considering:

3.  It  shall  be  unlawful  to  sell a bullet containing an explosive

17  substance designed to detonate upon impact or armor piercing  ammunition
