Mill Creek Rifle Club in Desoto, KS (between KC & Lawrence) has agreed to open a May 20-21 Appleseed rifle class to the public.  This event has previously been limited to MCRC members and just opened to the public.  Non-MCRC members will be charged a $6 range fee on site for the weekend.

A Rifleman can put 5 rounds into a postage stamp at 25 yards prone unsupported.  No bag, no bipod, no bench.  This is the size a target at 500 yards would appear.  That’s what we’ll teach you.

If that weekend doesn't work Bone Creek Gun Club near Pittsburg, KS is hosting Appleseed classes on July 22-23 and Oct 21-22.

Here's online registration for all KS Appleseeds.

Notice - Smith & Wesson 15/22 .22LR rifles have been temporarily banned from Appleseed while S&W and Appleseed work to determine the cause of malfunctioning rifles that have created safety concerns. That may or may not change before this event.

S&W centerfire AR15's, all .22LR conversions and non-S&W .22LR dedicated uppers plus all other centerfire and .22 LR rifles are allowed.
Email me at [email protected] for the latest status.

If you’ve wanted to learn the finer points of putting accurate rounds on target this is for you.  We’ll spend two days learning how to shoot the rifle from standing, seated, kneeling and prone with just a sling to help steady the rifle.  No bipods, bags or benches (although we do make any allowances needed for a person's physical limitations).

We’ll do our shooting at 25 yards using reduced size targets to simulate distances of up to 500 yards.  There’s no point walking back and forth to far away targets or worrying about wind and drop until you can actually put rounds on a simulated size target.

Here's the link to Appleseed's national calendar if you can't make it work in KS.

Here’s Appleseed's homepage where you can learn all about it.

The entry fee is $60 for adults, $20 for kids under 18 and $20 for military (AD, NG & Res), police and elected officials.

We’ll fire about 600 rounds over two days.  The class is held rain, snow or shine as long as it’s safe to drive.  Dress accordingly.

Because of the close distance lots of folks use .22LR rifles like Ruger’s 10/22.  Centerfire rifles like the AR-15 are welcome.  Any rifle and any sighting system is allowed but the course of fire is designed around removable magazine fed semi-autos.

Kids and new(er) shooters are welcome but this is not the class to learn how to shoot a rifle for the first time.  Students should at least know how to load, unload, clear a minor malfunction and must be safe standing up and sitting down with a rifle.

Since this is a 25yd event, I'll make my standing offer to loan the use of my Ruger 10/22 that is set up as a LTR (Liberty Training Rifle). Iron sights, good barrel, good trigger, mag release that's easy to use, adult proportioned stock, appropriate sling and several magazines.  Just add your Federal AutoMatch ammo and I guarantee the rifle is capable of earning you the coveted Rifleman patch on the first try.

 Very kind of you.

That looks like an extremely well put together rifle!  Is that stock factory or something else?  Unlike most Ruger stocks it looks like it was actually made to stay shouldered.

To anyone who has shot one of these. Scope or irons? I'll be using a 10/22. It has a scope on it now that I have shot only to sight it in. No big deal to pull it off.

Thank you. I bought a BX trigger today I need to get put in. I have the Ruger contest rifle that was set up for Appleseed. I will need to sight it in with the new trigger and without the can. Don't think I want to shoot the Appleseed with a can.

You absolutely CAN use a can if you want!  If it's legal in the state the Appleseed is in and the range doesn't have any goofy rules (this one doesn't) you're fine.  Bring select fire if you want but just leave the selector on semi for the class!

Irons or optics is totally up to the student.  If you're up for the additional challenge of hitting a postage stamp size target at 25 yards with irons then go for it.  If your eyes struggle with irons then use a magnified optic.  You don't get extra points for using irons.  The Marine Corps has pretty much given up on irons and I'm fine with following their lead!

For me personally I'm a fan of smaller & lighter 1-4 or 1-6 optics.  At 25 yards you don't "need" more than 3x or 4x and as Eric points out the higher the magnification the smaller field of view.  If a person was fine with fixed power then one of the fixed 3x or 4x scopes is all you need and will probably be lighter and have a more forgiving eye box than the adjustables.

Bring a nice thick shooting mat or foam camping pad to lay on.  Bring a pop up tent (with stakes) if you have one for shade plus chairs and even a small folding table (or tailgate) to hold all your stuff like spare mags and ammo behind the line.  Make sure the ammo you're bringing has been vetted in that rifle.  Bring lots of ammo and plenty of mags!  Have fun!

Thank you guys for all the tips and help. I had a great time and learned a lot. I've never used a sling before. I did squeak out a couple AQT's and earned my rifleman badge. Also a great range to shoot at I really enjoyed it. Now I want to do a winter seed. I like that blue patch.

@sigpros did a great job and earned his Rifleman badge on the second day of the class!

Here's sigpros being awarded his badge by Shoot Boss Ben Cochran.

There's a thread on the Appleseed Forum with some more pics and details of the shoot.  Anyone who attended is welcome to post their thoughts and those who missed out are allowed to post regrets!

We'll be doing another one at my home range near Pittsburg, KS (2 hours south of downtown KC) July 22-23.  Here's how to sign up!
