Just picked this up today,  Marlin 1895, 45.70.  This is a handy rifle.  My first 45.70. No clue why I wanted a 45.70, but this is a great feeling rifle.

I'm a big fan of the rossi/puma leverguns. Have 16-inchers in .357 and .44, and a 20-inch stainless in .454 Casull. There's not one of the three that I wouldn't trust my life with if necessary. The 20-inch stainless in .454 on top, 16" .44 in the middle, and 16" .357 on bottom:

Loaded properly, the .454 version is actually more powerful than a .308 or .45-70 either one. This is mine, with my ruger srh after I had the srh barrel shortened to 5 inches. There's not an animal in North America that can't be taken out to 150 yards or more with a .454 levergun:

Had a sling made for the .454 with cartridge loops. Hard part was finding a front sling mount that fit properly on the fat, double-walled magazine tube. Finally found that one intended for a 16-gauge shotgun fits perfectly:

The 16" in .357 with bushnell red dot scout-mounted makes a very fast brush gun. Handgun is a 681 in a Milt Sparks PMK:

Redneck tactical . The 16" .357 with scout-mounted red dot and Abraxas titanium artificial-environment suppressor. You can see in the above pic that I had to shorten the magazine tube slightly to allow the muzzle to extend enough for threading:

A major thing I like about about the 16" versions is their compactness - this is the .357 version before I put the reddot on it. Even with the suppressor in place, it's still the same size as a stock 10-22:
.

Nothing bad to say about any of them except that I wish they used a faster twist rate so I could use heavier bullets when loading subsonic .357's for use thru the suppressor. With their slow 1:30 twist rate (which is still faster than Marlin's 1:38 twist rate), I don't use bullets heavier than 158's in it; but 158's at 1,000 fps is still about .45 hardball power, which is fine for a short-range critter getter.

When not using the suppressor, I use full-power loads which in a .357 carbine more than equal a .44 magnum revolver - good for darn near anything in my area. Very versatile little carbines.

Looks like you hit the Rossi wood lottery!

I just put an octagon barrelled .45 Colt from EMF on layaway, the buttstock looks like it has similar grain.

EDIT: Oops, I replied before you posted "the rest of the story".

Beautiful gun, but that's the real score imo. With moulds on hand combined with the .38-55's case capacity, I'd be tempted to experiment with BP/Pyrodex loadings. It might be more expensive per round, but the higher-density loadings might have phenomenal accuracy (consistency) potential.
