I have been thinking about procuring an M16, but I live in Minnesota, which only allows curio and relic machine guns. I did some searching to see which, if any, M16s are categorized as C&Rs, and I came across this:
Are these early M16s good to go? I remember reading that early Colts were actually made of 6061 aluminum, is that true? Is this a fair price for this kind of niche MG? Is the real solution for me to just move to a state not represented in the Senate by Al Franken?

IMHO that's a good price and yes that receiver is 6061 which is fine and nothing to worry about. Besides the receiver and front take down pin there is nothing 601 about that rifle and it has a fugly Type E stock on her. As the ad says your basically buying it for the receiver. If you buy her you do realize that you would be obligated by the Gods of retro land to get her back into original configuration?

My first thought was 602, but yeah, upon closer inspection...parts-o-caster.

Ditch the 30-round mag for a 20 and replace that pistol grip w/ an A1 and you'd have a nice shooter.
(Pistol grip looks like a Lone Star to me but my eyes are bad.)

He has a C&R AR18 listed also, and a bunch of H&R Reisings.
I'd pick it up being that I live in MN and we are a C&R only for MG's but I'm pretty sure the wife would kick my ass for spending that much on a select fire rifle...
It looks good in the pictures I'm thinking it was re-anodized also...
IMHO it's a good price for what it is it may not be all correct but for C&R only folks it's the only way they'd be able to have a transferable M-16 style rifle...

Way too clean.

Well.........the ad does say it was refurbed by U.S. Anodizing. So, yeah, I'd guess that Victor did strip/anodize at least the lower.

Nice heater ;)
Can anyone ID the pistol grip?
Seems to be almost an A1 Lonestar?

Yep, early Lone Star.
You can make out the logo on one of the left side pics, if you hover your mouse over it to enlarge.

If you have $25,000 go for it. I am living vicariously through the retro forum.

There always this one, it's mostly correct and original with very little to do to make it excellent. Could probably be had for the same amount
For $11K less I would go with the AR18 unless you are dead set on an M16 and would use all the flexibility it would allow. I.e. Multiple calibers, barrel lengths etc.
The 18 is a fine gun and easy enough to modify AR mags to fit it. The only other issue would be spare parts availability.

No way, if you can afford it the m16 is better in ever single way.

Well, not every way.
Remember it's what Eugene came up with after the M16 design
Folding stock, gas piston to name a few

Spare parts are going to be a PITA with the AR18. I would go for a Colt 601, preferably one in original configuration.

Didn't he come up with the AR-16 using sheet metal and common tools to sell to poor countries that couldn't afford m16s, that then it was scaled down to the AR-18?

If you buy that 601 receiver, you ARE required to put it back to original with all the early 601 parts.
It won't be very cheap to buy the correct parts, but it would be worth a lot more in the end.
