I'm thinking of purchasing a Surefire 762 fast attach suppressor. I am wondering if I could purchase 556 mounts and it'll work or are the mounts proprietary to each caliber.

The fast attach are the older models, right? I can't speak for those, but I have a SOCOM 762-RC that works on the 556 mounts just fine.

Ok, good to know. I'm not real familiar with the Surefire line-up. I'm debating of getting a 14.5" PredatOBR and that has a Surefire F/S perm attached to it, so I am wondering if I could also use the can for my 556 guns too.

I can't speak for the SOCOM models, but my 762K works on my MB556Ks. I would assume that feature transferred over to the SOCOM series.

My recently acquired SOCOM762-RC works perfectly with the SFMB762 and SFMB556 mounts

Yes, all Surefire 762 cans regardless of series fits on 556 mounts.
