the local shop here starts at $350 foran "AR style rifle" one color

that is way too steep for a paint job.

What is a good price?

That's insane.  My local shop charges $175 for single color long guns.

Do these guys do the work themselves or piece it out to a third party?  Probably cheaper to eliminate the middle man if so.  Good luck, that sounds expensive to me.

That is steep for a single color on an AR. I charge more for long guns that are a pain to work with but AR's break down to just a light upper, lower and rail and I normally charge $100-$140 for just that in single color local, more for additional items or colors. You can also do it yourself using Brownells Aluma-Hyde 2 in a rattle can and it is really durable as long as you put the time in prep.
