I'm trying to pick up a new 10/22, I remember prices a few years ago hovered right at $200. Today it's more, so I ask if anyone knows the best place to get one without paying $270 (the current average price)?

Couldn't find a thread on this but if there is forgive me.

Looked at both. Walmart doesn't carry them anymore, at least the ones near me. Slickguns hasn't had a 10/22 on their site in over a year

Last 10/22 I got was a lasermax at PSA for $220 shipped.  I've seen the 10/22 takedowns for under $300 there.  I know they gotta have some closer to the $200 range.

Yea, here toy go:  http://palmettostatearmory.com/ruger-10-22rpf-22lr.html

$210.  Go get it.

Had to drive 20 minutes out of the way but I found a Walmart that dug up a carbine from the back for me for 209.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, now I gotta find a good thread about customizing

The best deal on a 10/22 is a pre-1980 with steel butt plate, walnut stock, and aluminum trigger housing.  If it's in excellent condition, it's still a deal even if you pay $400 for it.   The 10/22 was introduced as a quality, adult sized .22 sporting rifle, and the factory specs required at least 4 MOA accuracy at 100 yards.  Most of those early carbines would shoot 1.5 MOA at 100 yards with match ammo.   Not surprisingly, the 10/22 also had a price to match as the $54.50 MSRP in 1964 is equivalent to $417 today.   To put that in perspective, it's about what people expect to pay for a CZ455 today.

The later (and current) 10/22s are designed to be inexpensive to produce with reduced quality assurance processes and the knowledge that shooters want a cheap "starter" rifle to tart up with aftermarket parts.

Given that seems to be your intention, it's a good thing you bought one of the new ones, rather than ruining one of the good ones.

That's pretty much what I wanted. I've had ARs, Shotguns, and handguns for years. I just wanted something that I could take to the range every weekend without breaking the bank. If I did get an old one, I certainly wouldn't "ruin" it

Nice rifle.

I have a 1967 Model that I received for a Christmas gift when I was a little boy and I have put tens of thousands of rounds through that gun and can still hold 1.5 MOA with it, great little gun that has never let me down.

I also just inherited a brand new stainless model that my Dad gave to me right before he passed away last Oct. and the quality and accuracy is so much worse on it than my old 10/22, I use my old one to pick off ground squirrels all of the time in the yard and my yard is quite large, the new one I can even get close to them.

I managed to snag one hidden in the back at walmart for 209. I checked academy and they wanted 270 for both the polymer and wood stock version of the basic carbine.

Have seen them at sportsmans warehouse for around $200. Keep an eye on all those mass merchandisers we love to hate ( wal Mary dicks  etc) and this holiday season a 200 dollar 10/22 should be pretty easy to find

I ordered one online from Cabelas that I will pickup. No shipping $199.00 = $214.00 with tax. To get for the 189 price you had to go there this morning. For 10 bucks I'll stay in my pajamas.
