Had never heard of these. Have these been out a while?? Be pretty cool to have a shorty AOW built on one if they work as advertised.

I have heard of them and there are many Youtube videos on them. Black Aces is a Florida based company that builds comlete mag fed shotguns on their own "Mossberg" receivers. They show that kit on their website for $435 unless I'm not reading something correctly, (or maybe that's a complete shotgun as this video seems to imply).
This video shows how to convert a regular Mossberg. Not sure why they didn't use sound. |

Yeah I like the concept. No matter how outdated scatterguns are they are still my favorite. I had one of the Knoxx sidewinder kits that I never got to work but loved the idea.

Only grip is they don't really work with saiga mags. You have to change the follower and then it doesn't work with the saiga. I don't see extra followers listed on their sight but I haven't called yet. No big deal to have dedicated mags but all advertising list it like is standard saiga mags

I'm pretty sure that's making an SBS since the braces are for pistols and there is no such thing as shotgun pistols. Just something to think about. ATF letter specifically says pistol or other firearm... I wrote this up a while back to explain it to a friend, broken down barney style Definition of a shotgun by MN and Federal law is.... a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder, and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or a single projectile for each single pull of the trigger. definition of a short barreled shotgun is a SHOTGUN having one or more barrels less than eighteen inches in length and any weapon made from a shotgun (whether by alteration, modification or otherwise) if such a weapon as modified has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches. Part to recognize so far is a shotgun is intended to be fired from the shoulder.... a Pistol Grip Only shotgun is technically not a shotgun it is classified as a firearm because it's not intended to be fired from the shoulder.... |
|
[#22]
Definition of an AOW is... Any weapon or device CAPABLE OF BEING CONCEALED on the person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive;
A pistol or revolver having a barrel with a smooth bore designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell; Weapons with combination shotgun and rifle barrels 12 inches or more, less than 18 inches in length, from which only a single discharge can be made from either barrel without manual reloading; and Any such weapon which may be readily restored to fire. Such term shall not include a pistol or a revolver having a rifled bore, or rifled bores, or weapons designed, made, or intended to be fired from the shoulder and not capable of firing fixed ammunition. Definition of a concealed weapon is an oal under 26" Sig brace cannot turn a firearm into an NFA device per the atf's technical branch. Therefore a pgo firearm with a shorter than 18" barrel and sig brace having an OAL of 26" or more would only be considered a firearm and would NOT fall under the NFA. |

Take that however you want. |

Does Black Aces manufacture the Mossberg 500 receivers? Or are they from Mossberg?

[#30]
These 500 mag fed receivers have really caught my attention.
So is it possible to order all the other parts for the Mossberg 500 to build a complete gun? Where would you order the parts from? (someone have a checklist/parts list??? ) I'm not familiar with the Mossberg at all. First start would be to order a one of those the Black Aces Pro Series 500 kits. Where is the source for short barrels 7"-10" (Yes I plan to build a SBS and familiar with the NFA stuff) |
|
[#31]
I figured a maverick or a used 500 would probably be the cheapest way of getting all the parts.

Build one for a Stoeger M2000/M3000, so I can make a semi-auto PGO SBS that's 18" OAL and feeds from mags Stoeger is recoil operated and has the action spring under the handguard, so it would be about ideal. I can't remember what upcoming SciFi video game I saw something similar in, but it would be pretty cool as a door buster. I searched for some info on Mossberg 590A1 was brought here where I saw this thread, had something to contribute, joined and posted and you probably learned something you didn't know so where's the problem with that? One more thing about these receivers that most dont know is that it's more than just swapping parts which is tough enough with the bolt without an arbor press. Also each mag and proprietary follower needs to be fit for reliable feeding and function just like a Saiga shotgun. |

I purchased one of these receivers.
While putting it together the smith found that the firing pin was to short. Called the vendor and they are sending a new bolt assembly out Monday Great customer service so far. I'll update as the build progresses |

I also bought one of these and just got it last week. The only parts I have bought so far are the stock and a 10 round mag.
Anyway I do plan to Form 1 it into a SBS, could someone that has a 500 tell me what the length is from the receiver to end of barrel and what that barrel length is? Thanks |

He's telling you the length of the barrel when cut in front of the barrel nut...15.5". A factory SBS has a shortened mag tube so the barrel is 14" on those.

Quickest way to gauge barrel length and where to cut is drop a rod down the barrel with a closed action and mark the rod at the muzzle. That's the barrel length.. measure back from the mark to gauge how far back from the muzzle you should cut. Leave a little for refacing the muzzle. |

I don't have a barrel yet so I am unable to measure it myself. I was asking so I can put the OAL length within a half inch or so on the Form 1, which I plan to get to the CLEO for sign off later this week. So I plan to build a SBS with a 10" Barrel. So to figure out my OAL: length from front of the receiver to the end of the but stock extended is 23.25" + ~9.25" for the 10" barrel minus the about 1" so I'll go with .75" to give me an OAL of 32.5" I know for the 10" build, I will have to move and modify the take down lug under the barrel, modify the magazine tube, and the Action Slide. I called one place to get an estimate to do that and it was $400.00 I think I'll be able to do it myself or have some buddies help me out. I was thinking I can actually work on doing all the mods minus cutting the barrel before I even get the approved Form 1 back, (well that depends on how long it takes with my procrastination might be approved before I even get the barrel ordered LOL) |
