When all of you guys buy this gun for carry, I'll be anxious to hear if you get tired of its weight.  I bought an MK9 Kahr for CCW because of its size about 13 yrs ago.  I carried it daily for 4-5 yrs.  The G27 Glock that I carry now feels lighter and holds many more rounds.  This new gun by Rem might make a cool range toy though.

My S&W 3913 that I carry every day is 22 oz empty, 29 oz loaded. All the talk about 1 or 2 oz here or there means nothing. I didn't notice any weight difference but to me a G26 is clunkier and less comfortable to carry than my Smith. The Glock is also harder to shoot well. It's not worth the discomfort when the only advantage to the Glock is an extra 2 rounds.

It is a pretty light and slim pistol, so I can kind of see that reaction. The thing that struck me was how easy the slide was to retract. The trigger is decent, and the grip safety does not require anything like a he-man grip to disengage.

One of the sales guys at my local shop was less than impressed, but he's a 1911 guy, so that is fully expected. Says the same about Glocks, Beretta's, etc. He despises them all equally.

I'm looking forward to picking mine up, and am carefully watching the field-strip vids on youtube.

Well I looked at it today. Trigger is strange, not bad just different. No reset so you have to release it completely. The grip safety engages easily but I noticed I have to shift my normal hold to depress it. Slide racks easily. Sights are fine. Pistol is narrow and balances well.

I'm going to wait until I can shoot someone else's before I decide to buy it.

I don't have a Shield, PPS or XD-S, so I can't make those comparisons.  The only other handguns I have are not "competitors" with the R51 (1911's, etc.)

Excellent post. Thank you. What is your overall review of the gun? range report? keep up the good work.

I'm heading to the range right now to shoot it.  I hope it likes Winchester Q4318 9mm NATO ammo, because that is all I have in 9mm at the moment!

Impressions of it without shooting it are favorable.  I got to play with them at SHOT Show, and those seemed to have a "pre-production" quality to them.  Many think the action is "gritty" or "coarse", but I attribute that to the totally different way that it locks/unlocks vs. the usual Browning tilting barrel setup we have in nearly every other handgun.  We just aren't used to it, so it seems "wrong" or "bad."  It almost hits a "false" stop about half way through when racking it, if that makes sense.  You have to make sure to retract the slide ALL the way back.

Trigger is fine to me, and registers 4lbs at the tip, 6lbs in the middle and 7lbs at the top.  That makes sense since the leverage on the trigger varies by the distance from the fulcrum. I'd guess that is averages out between 5 and 6 lbs "effective" pull weight.  Some have complained about the lack of an audible or tactile "click" on trigger reset, but I doubt that will be a factor for me...(check karma title above avatar....)

I am concerned about my grip on this gun.  I'm used to 1911's and go with a "thumbs forward" grip that I jam up as high as possible.  From looking at it, the rear slide serrations may become a "cheese grater" on my hand.  We'll see as I shoot it.

Mostly I was interested in it because of the suppressor possibilities.  With a fixed barrel, the suppressor won't need a LID or Nielsen device (booster) to function.  That means I should be able to run a shorter suppressor and not have functionality issues.  Might have to get a Thompson Machine Poseidon to try out.  The SHOT samples had TiRANT 9S's on them, but those are the same length with or without a booster.  I figure AAC could make a TiRANT 9S-DTM (Short - Direct Thread Mount) and have it another 3/4" to 1" shorter....

I'll try to get a buddy to shoot some video with my iPhone in slo-mo 120FPS to check out the recoil.

Don't expect any updates until tomorrow at the soonest, I won't be back from shooting league tonight until after midnight PDT.  Patience!

The video is about 6 minutes, since I show clips in real time then at 10% speed.  I'm sure I'll get a lot of "TL;DW" on that....

Shot about 80 rounds through it, with 2 weird malfunctions (detailed shortly.)  Overall, I find the pistol very easy to control, and fast hammers are easy too.  No video of the hammers, but one with a few controlled pairs in it.

Again, I'm a trigger "slapper", so the lack of an audible or tactile reset is completely irrelevant to me.  I did find that it shot about 2" to 3" low from POA (single shots), and 3 other shooters had the same experience.  We were only shooting at 18 to 20 feet, but we shouldn't be that low that close.

Sights:  Really needs night sights, and maybe a shorter front sight to address the low POI.  But that would add to the cost, so I know why Remington skipped them and expects you to do it yourself.  A factory option would be nice though.  Other than the POA/POI issue, I thought the sights were good and easy to pick up.

No "slide bite", although it did leave some grease marks on the web of the hand for several shooters.  The front strap checkering is nice, but aggressive enough to get uncomfortable after multiple magazines.  We were shooting Winchester Q4318 9mm NATO 124 grain ammo, which is a little hotter.

Now, for those 2 weird malfunctions.  One happened to me, the other to a friend (Shooter #3 in the video.)  On mine, I was shooting one-handed (in the dark) during the course of fire.  The slide locked back from the magazine, but there was one round left to go.  The round had popped up out of the mag (not chambered), and the magazine activated the slide stop.  Very strange.  Also, since this was during the timed COF, and it was my last shot, I wasn't as focused on what the gun was doing, but more focused on calling my shots.  As I was shooting one-handed, it could have been a limp-wrist issue too.  All the shots in the video were taken that.

In the video, you see the slide lock back on Shooter #3 with one round left in the magazine.  We couldn't see where the magazine had activated the slide stop, and based on his particular grip, we believe that his support hand thumb activated the slide stop under recoil.  So something to keep in mind about your hand size and grip on this gun.  Shooter #1 (me) and Shooter #2 (friend) are both pretty big guys with big hands, while Shooter #3 is a much smaller gentleman (like half the size of Shooter #2.....)

Other than there, there were no FTF/FTEx/FTEj incidents.

Nope.  Rock solid.  Whew.

I anticipate some issues will crop up, that being the nature of buying on the bleeding edge.  But that shit isn't acceptable from a QC perspective.

Not so good. That's the second complaint I've read about a sticky hard to rack slide. The other pistol is on it's way back to Remington.

I'm unsure how upset to be on these few examples of issues.

Part of me fully agrees that the gun out of the box should be mechanically correct. The other part is parked on the side of not being able to judge until just a basic field strip and clean is done before throwing red flags around.  Could just be a burr or shaving that found itself into a bad place.

The loose sight, yeah...that goes back.  The hard slide.....clean it first and some minor troubleshooting.  If it's a burr or tightness from paint that will break in with shooting, two easy passes with a file and go shoot the thing.  It's not like its a $2500 custom gun where your expectations should be off the chart too.

I agree and disagree.

The average gun owner should NOT be taking a file to ANY part of their firearm but having said that, the average gun owner should be able to take a gun to the range, shoot the thing and allow the parts to seat against each other.

Having said THAT...i really do believe that there needs to be more stringent quality control in regard to what gets passed through QC AFTER the final test fire.  I recently handled two CZ P09's at a gun store down here where both should NEVER have passed through QC. One was missing one of the frame pins that holds in the damned locking block and the other had a timing issue with the firing pin block lifter arm.  Neither of those guns should have gone out of the door, especially after test firing.

One other point to make...Remington has apparently FLOODED the market with guns as they're ALL over gunbroker so statistically we may be seeing a VERY small percent that actually have issues.  Not to mention...what's his face, Tim, usually writes good stuff but has had some sort of stick up his ass in regard to the R51 since day 1.  Condemning a design because of early teething issues is plain stupid.  If that were the case i should have ditched Glock's long ago as i had several gen 4 guns that were lemons.

This isn't unlike what we saw with the first run of R1 1911's - I'm confident they'll get it worked out, but it's also why I'll be waiting for a while to pick one up.

Damn that rear sight movement is awful!

I definitely won't be ordering one of these from an online distributer without quality checking myself first.

Picked mine up last night. The rear sight is fine as is the rest of the gun.

It is light and thin and with the rounded corners seem like it will be good for carrying.

Field stripped it for inspection and cleaning. The take down is different, but once you do it the first time it's no biggie. I didn't have any trouble with the slide lock spring when reassembling.

I am anxious to shoot it. I will post my thoughts after running a couple hundred rounds through it later this week.

I handled one of these at my lgs the other day. I hated it. The trigger pull is more like a break with no take-up; there is absolutely NO reset; the ergonomics, well, there are none; everything about the pistol screams cheap.

Conclusion: would not buy. Money would be better spent on hookers and blow.

eta: how could I forget the grip safety!??

Can't wait for all the glock fanboys to come in and say how the grip safety is dated and real gunfighters(owners) don't use them because they add  too much complexity.

Could you point to the place on the doll where the bad Glock owner touched you?

Mine just came in..........checked it out and it has none of the issues......still at my FFLs tho, I'm in NJ and I'm waiting on my purchase permit.
Once I shoot it I'll have more to report, but so far, so good.

finally had a chance to check one out in person at the local Gander Mountain. Asked the clerk if I could check out the new Remington R51 he said " What? Whats that? I've never heard of it" I had to walk him over to the case and show him it. "Oh, I've never seen this before" .....

Anyways, It was pretty cool. Its definitely slim and trim. I have no problem with the grip safety, but the one on this gun was shaking and rattling around really bad, felt like it was going to fall out of the gun.

price was $429. I was really hoping these would be at $399 like the buzz was before SHOT. Well see what happens. I think it has the potential to be a good little gun, but i'll wait and see more reviews and see if Remington comes out with a rebate. Haven't checked my usual LGS, maybe they have it cheaper, I would never buy from Gander unless they had a deal on something used I was looking for.

Me too. I'm hoping that by the time the threaded barrel version comes out they have all the areas of concern fixed.

i went to a local gun store today and surprise they had one in stock
so i handled it for a few minutes, the slide rack is not smooth, it's light compared to the shield, but it's kind of "sticky" (lots of "bumps" along the way) for lack of a better word
then i tried to dry fire it a couple of times
no go for me
the backstrap safety is what kills it for me, it has to "click" in order to fire, and it doesn't "click" easily
i tried to fire a couple of times the safety didn't deactivate
so no way in hell this can be for self defence gun for me (others might like it so all the power to them)
too bad
also the mag release button is very hard to press

by the way, I also tried glock 42, it's very small and cute, lol
