I lucked into this in a junk box for $10 - I didn't even try to talk him down, LOL.  He thought it was defective because it had a "C" clip instead of a rivet.  This will be a great addition to my 601.  I think the open top canvas carrier would be correct for this, would it not?  If that is the case, does anyone know where I can find such a case, and/or what I should expect to pay for one?  Thanks.

Yep, canvas bag with a cleaning rod assembly. I have seen them at shows(although been a while) for 30ish?

Nothing defective re that Colt bipod, the C clip denotes it as an early mid 60s model to match your 601. As for the bipod case I have never seen that model before, does it have any markings? The use of Velcro leads me to believe it's of a later period maybe 70s and possibly not US issue unless it's experimental. Check WillyPs blog for examples/photos of early bipod cases, see if you find one with an open top and long pocket on the front for a three piece cleaning rod made of heavy cotton canvas.

Super nice snag for $10.

Here's the one that goes with a Model 601 (marked "Colt/Armalite"):

Is that case nylon or canvas? I've never seen one like that before, with smaller pockets on the sides and a Velcro closure.

The case is nylon, and appears to be typical USGI construction.  I cannot figure out what the pockets are for.  The case also has D rings on the side of it for attachment of a shoulder strap.

With those D rings for a strap, it looks like some sort of rifle grenade pouch, that has side pockets for hand grenades. I've never seen a U.S. Issue item like that.

The pockets are not big enough for grenades.  With the D rings on the side for a shoulder strap, I might be inclined to think it is a rifle scope case, except that the bipod fits so perfectly.
