Hi All,
I'm a noob here with a passel of questions... These firearms are original but basically in pieces at this point and I'm trying to put them back together for the most value. I'm fairly certain I have all original parts as they were purchased in 1963 &1964 but..... 2 Colt 601's s/n 011xxx and 012xxx, should the furniture be green or black? I'm seeing they were put on the first 8500 units after the brown? There is a full set of green furniture but the black furniture I have to work with is black over brown, is this correct? Is it better or worse to strip the paint down to the brown? There is no 601 uppers but rather 602's, is it better to leave this on for value or obtain a replica 601 from NDS? How do I know the windage wheels I have are original (these ones are with an arrow and the letter 'R')? What are the identity markings on the trigger groups? Both are missing the charge handle, duckbill compensators, gas tubes, one mag release, . There is one magnetic gas tube but it appears to have a late bend in it, is this right? Any telltale markings on the edgewater buffers? Thank you so much for all your help! Even though these are not mine, I got bitten by the retro bug just researching them! If I get permission, I will post pics for everyone to enjoy! |

Need pics if/when possible. Sounds interesting.
Just an observation but man, what is it with these new guys and their retro rifles? An awful lot of them lately. |

The 601s came in BOTH green furniture,AND black..., If those 601s were sold to LEO,or secret service or certain other organizations they COULD HAVE COME FROM THE FACTORY with black paint over the brown fiberglass. I have a set given to me by a member who purchased a real 601 in the 11,xxx sn range. The stock is a type B,,brown fiberglass with black paint. The PG is brown fiberglass with black paint. The HGs however, are brown fiberglass with green paint, then black paint on top of the green. The black paint goes BEHIND the heat shields so that indicates factory painted. Me personally,,I WOULD NOT REMOVE YOUR BLACK PAINT as there are less factory black painted 601 furniture sets then there are green ones. Preserve the history of them.

Pics always help,be SURE to take good clear pics of any and ALL the markings on the barrels. Generally found on the right side, between the lugs of the front sight bases. Be sure to post pic of the "UP and arrow" on the top of the front sight bases so we know if they are cast or forged FSBs.

|
PS,,to date,I believe there is only one person making replica edgewater buffers and I HOPE TO GOD HE'S MARKING THEM IN SOME WAY FOR FUTURE ID PURPOSES.
I've never seen markings on any of the original edgewaters I've owned over the years. There are reasons why Colt changed them and prolly the same reasons why they were not replicated. |

Thanks for the info, they will be preserved as is now! The black furniture set is exactly the same as your, the PG is peeling but the rest is still in nice shape! These firearms did come from the factory to a certain other organization.

Lol, got it! These are original! 4 of them total. The FSB's are all cast with the raised markings. I cannot find any marking on the barrels around the FSB though. They are marked c chrome lined though near the muzzle. If permission obtained, I will post pics next week!

The original windage wheel I had for a pattern had little prickpunch marks on the back. I think they were hardness test marks. If you've had them since the 60's there were probably no repro parts back then. If you want you can send me a good close up and picture I can tell you if it's one of mine. Besides myself I don't know of anyone else making repros.

Not to be a tease, but pictures have been approved for posting when I can get them. With some luck I will try have at least some up by Friday. Keep in mind the rifle is mostly in pieces at this point.
Thanks everyone for the info so far, I'm still real curious if its better value wise to put on a 602 upper vs finding a replica 601 upper, thoughts? |

You can say that again.... I'm sure there's someone out there that would trade you a real 601 upper for a real 602 upper. |

Thank You Boywonder777 for posting these pics! the barrel is a replacement barrel though the original FSB was used lower parts look legit, bolt catch is a replacement. The lower parts will be replaced when time allows, I do have them firing pin head broken. Yes it is, anyone have a replacement? furniture looks original, type B stock. charging handle is a replacement and upper is a 604 upper w/ the raised markings. sight wheel looks correct, it may be a repro just b/c the chance of an early wheel on a later 604 upper isn't as likely as a later wheel on an earlier upper. I changed the sight wheel from the original one on it thinking it was wrong to begin with. I'm pretty sure the correct one I took off is supposed to have the numbers on it. |
