Is it legal to own Colt M16 Bolt Carriers? I seen some talk of them on here but am not  fully sure of its legal status. If it is legal how do people get them? Also, does it do anything to enhance the guns operation or is it only for the people who like their rifles as close to the actual thing as possible?

It's legal as long as your rifle doesn't fire full auto with it installed.  There is a lette from the ATF to Colt regarding this.  It basically says they don't recommend it, but if it doesn't make the gun full auto it's legal.

Why use one?  It's heavier & seems to make my 7.5 & 11.5 pistols more reliable.  Because I have a access to M16s on occasion & it's nice to be able to use my upper if the occasion presents itself.  Becase I can?

This seems to be one of those gray areas. Even though the ATF may say it's okay (kinda sorta), I just wouldnt want the hassle of having to explain why there is a full auto carrier to some nosey bastard.

Are there any real benefits to using an M16 carrier. Not pie in the sky, but something that provides concrete improvments

There's nothing "gray" about it

Here it is, straight from the horse's mouth. Page two is the relevant portion to settle the question once and for all:

Even Colt, the great PC bastard god, is shipping their rifles with M16 carriers these days.  Good enough?

Do you have to buy a Colt rifle to get the bolt carrier or can it be purchased seperatly? On the Colt website I can't find where any civilian sales would be.

They pop up (Colt M-16 bolt and carrier)on the EE boards every so often.

Sometimes someone like CDNN, TAPCO, or SARCO may have some M16 takeouts.

You can buy new ones from SAW sales and a few others.

Watch the EE board for them to pop up.

RRA might now be selling M16 carriers but I am still checking into that.

Don't listen to these guys, they have no idea what they are talking about.  It is illegal for you to have an M16 bolt carrier.  PERIOD.

Because I'm a nice guy I'm willing to talk yours off your hands so that you don't get in trouble.  Just box it up and mail it to me ASAP and I'll even cover the shipping for you.

See, I'm nice like that

I'll make you an even better deal.  I have some spare carriers in new or like new condition.  For every new Colt M16 carrier you send me, I'll send you back two neutered carriers.

Contact Specialized Armament Warehouse (S.A.W.), they may have them.
