I'm interested in finding a high quality tent, not a Walmart grade item.

The main characteristics I have in mind are:

- Durability.  I don't want something I'll have to replace in a couple years.

- Waterproof.  I've been rained on inside tents before.  I'd prefer to stay dry no matter what is happening outside.

- Relative ease of set up.  It's just me and my wife, and we're old enough to order from the back of the menu at Perkins.  I don't expect a George Jetson "shake it and it assembles itself", but it shouldn't require an engineering degree.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Mine has seen yearly use for about 5 years now and has held up well.

Depends on what you want to spend.  REI is a very good place to shop for one.  Their house brand are fine tents.  I recommend a four man, bath tub style floor, taped seams, full coverage rain fly, geodesic design.  Also, the more poles the better for shelter integrity.  Poles will increase cost, weight, and set up time though.  As a mid level brand, don't be afraid of Eureka.  High end, I'm a fan of Sierra Designs.

Eureka Outfitter 6 man. Easy enough for the Boy Scouts to set up and we've used them with our Troop for years with very few replacements.

Will stand up to 35 kt winds

I have a nemo losi 3p tent for backpacking amazing quality.  I just purchased a bigagnes tensleep station 6 for car camping. my decision for the tensleep was based on size and the vestibule.  I was going back and forth between the tensleep and the bighouse. Some of the state parks I camp at have smaller tent pads and I like how the rainflyncovers the tensleep and has a good sized front vestibule that can be configured several different ways as well as a small rear vestibule for the other door.   I do like the garage you can get for the big house but it adds alot of length to the tent.

I'm a Eureka! fan, but at some point I will try a big canvas tent.

I have and really like Sierra Designs and Big Agnes tents but for car camping I'd get a nice big Kelty or Cabelas tent that I could stand up in and is 2-2.5x bigger than needed (4-5 person tent for 2 ppl).

Since you want durability and intend it for car camping I would look at something that is outfitter grade.
Examples are the Kelty Outfitter Pro and the Alps Mountaineering Extreme Outfitter.
They have heavy duty flooring and zippers.
Timberline also makes an outfitter grade tent too.

I own a Marmot Limestone Four and although not as heavy duty as the others I mentioned it does have a much heavier duty floor than other tents in it's category.
All of the tents I mentioned are very easy to put up.

...I just pulled the trigger on a Cabela's Alaknak 12X12.

This past week I saw a special on the website that they were including the vestibule ($250) for no additional charge.  Today being payday, I was ready to order.  I got on the website and saw that the free vestibule special was gone.

You're going to love the tent. Just went on website, it has the free vestibule offer. Wonder if they changed it back?
