glad you are okay. I know the feeling of thinking you are shot.
My friend and I came in from a day of hunting on some property. We were unloading everything and KABOOM. 30-06 in a trailer is real loud, he was standing right next to me. Luckily he only shot a window out.

Surprisingly they didn't! Can't explain that one because they're usually running to hide soon as they hear a gunshot.

so your buddy is gonna buy you a new TV, right?
I wish, he can't afford it. He's offered but I know he can't pay for it and he's a good friend(even though he almost shot me) and I'd rather not lose a good friend over a tv set.

Thinking exactly this.... And still loaded for that matter.  I see two negligent behaviors that should be corrected.  Do you hand your side arm to people loaded as well to show them?
I know, "reading is for faggots" but we didn't un-holster and set our pistols on the table while eating". We left the house to go eat and after returning home then un-holstered and sat them on the kitchen table.

Leaving loaded handguns unholstered on the table is a bad idea, as you now know.  At least have holsters for them to go into.

Be mindful of bullet setback.

One of the things I like about modern wheelguns. Easy to unload and load, no setback, heavy and deliberate trigger pull. They just feel safe

I have found that what first time shooters instinctively do is put their finger on the trigger. It is such a natural place to rest the finger, they just can't help themselves.

I always start new shooters with a blue gun or even a realistic looking squirt gun. Something that has realistic look and feel (and a trigger) but something we can make mistakes with and take corrective action. Only after they can demonstrate the Four Absolutes do I move on to "real" guns. Yes, some people never make it past the blue gun stage. If they are not taking it seriously or cannot take instruction (too macho) I suggest a game of Golf instead.

Sorry OP but I believe this one is on you. You assumed the role of Instructor, you created a classroom and you created the circumstances in which a "student" was able to handle a loaded firearm not under your immediate control.

Glad nobody was injured...or worse.

The bold is an absolutely correct assessment and an easy tell for me when I take someone to the range for the first time as to their general level of experience.

I'm glad you're ok OP.   Don't ever lay your firearm down on the table in front of someone that you don't trust implicitly again.

Well you did leave unholstered, loaded guns with no external safety laying around in the open with untrained people in the room.
And Glaser safety slugs are very much less than ideal for effectively stopping people that want to kill you...

I think first think first is,

Go to the store and buy your dogs some treats. Their ears are probably still ringing. Plus good dogs always need treats, or atleast mine do

also have a question, why do you unholster your gun to set it down loaded? If you do not want to carry it why not take off the holster too (To protect the trigger) Especially around someone who is new to firearms. not judging just honestly curious.

After the ND and everyone was settled down we sat down and had a discussion on what happened, why etc. He was devastated for a bit, kept saying "I almost killed my good friend". Went over that is exactly why you never pick up someone else's gun, why you never put your finger on the trigger until your ready to shoot and so on. We weren't sure whether to go shoot or not but I said lets go. Took them out to the range and had a good time, they shot quite a few pistols and a couple rifles. Wife and I kept a close eye on him the entire time and he never, not once, put his finger on a trigger again until he was ready to shoot. I think he learned a lesson that day, and so did I.

Came home, clean everything up and then got drunk.

My wife and I live alone and our son is in college. The only people usually in our home are Military/Vets, Police and/or "gun guys" so I'm usually not too concerned as they have always either not even given a second glance at guns laying on the table or if they do they've asked "is it loaded, can I see it" and I unload it and then hand it to them. When we come home from work we take off our weapon/s and lay them on the table, usually in their holster. I am an FFL so even though we have two dogs and an alarm system I still do worry about a home invasion type robbery so I like to have a loaded gun nearby. I did learn a lesson and I'm going to be more cautious from now on, that was sort of the point of putting up this thread, probably should've explained it a little better in the original post.

Looking impressive in ballistics gel and actual terminal ballistics are two totally different things.

You learned your lesson about leaving loaded guns around firearms novices, but you need to spend some time educating yourself on terminal ballistics as well. Worry more about 12in minimum penetration in gel and less about "over penetration". Any effective defense load will overpenetrate, period the end.
