The only one I own is a SOG which is worthless. Had no edge when I got it, edge was actually rounded. After a LOT of effort I got it reasonably sharp. But it dulls after little use. The grip is nice and that's all it has going for it.

Is there a quality machete available for under 50 bucks? I would prefer carbon steel.

Main uses would be hacking at cedar and mesquite limbs. And zombies, of course.

OP,forget all the Boutique brands and do yourself a favor. People that use them in jungles swear by em

ETA I bought the  five pack listed and tossed two in the truck and took the rest to the cabin for clearing willow patches where I didn't want to take my chainsaw. Bolo is my favorite for thinning thumb sized willows

http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_1_3_hso_sc_smartcategory_4?rh=n%3A135355011%2Ck%3ACondor+knife&keywords=Condor+knife&ie=UTF8&qid=1448696359&sr=8-3-acs

Very heavy duty and great quality.

Condor knife and tool.

I have a golok and a village parang...they are both very nice and work very good at brush cutting.

I also have this one which is for heavier work than the Gerber, and made in the US.

Those Cold Steel machetes are cheaper on Amazon.

IMHO, you can NEVER go wrong with anything from Cold Steel.  Folks like to poke fun at them, but we have some ultra fine expensive Cold Steel knives from Korea and Japan, including some swords (Katanas) from them that were made in JP.  IMO, pretty much everything Cold Steel puts out will be the epitome of quality in its price range.

A $10 Tramontina is going to be better than 99% of the other stuff out there.

I do miss my Collins machetes though

The only Cold Steel knife I own is their roach belly. It's a fantastic knife.

I like these Marbles brand:

I have three scattered around. They come sharp and cut well. Mine hold an edge well too.

I'm sure I'll get flak for this but I bought one of those bear gryls parangs for work and it has held up fantastically. I like the heft of it over a regular machete, a lot more controllable too in my opinion.

I have the 18" KUKRI MACHETE WITH SHEATH.

This is a very rugged tool! The steel is very hard; it requires a grinder to put a good edge on it, followed by a stone. I've used it for clearing brush, splitting 2x4s for firewood.

Srsly, it's a brutally solid blade. The price just almost doubled I see; I got mine for about $25, including sheath.

This blade isn't a "finely-finished" blade that will make you weep if you scratch it. It is a solidly-built tool.

Just picked up a CS Gladius.

It's no kukri for heavy stuff but it's a hell of a machete and would definitely work as a sword.

Sharp as hell, nice flexible blade and a very good handle.

My cold steel works GREAT.  Better than I expected. Kurkri Magnum model, heavy, but it chops through ANYTHING.
