I knew a guy that was at Loran Station Iwo Jima..he said it wasn't bad.

Another I knew was on Guam..loved it !!

I think the best I heard was Kodiak  AK.........as a GM1 it was one of the most requested billets.

I think Ice Breaker duty as a GM was also highly requested.

This was back in the 70 and 80 .

I did 6 years on a big white ones,  3 years at Group Portland ME....I hated Group Portland with a passion!!

My last years at Cape May was tit duty, the ass available during the summer was phenomenal!!

I was at Group Portland ME as my first duty station in 1974 at the small boat station.  Loved it there.

Now.  You want to talk ISOLATED!  Daughter spent a year at LORAN Station Port Clarence AK.

Video of tower destruction when it was closed a year after she left.

Kwajalein was the site of the early Missile Defense System with the Nike-Zeus program (see Wikipedia).

Terminus end of Starwars. Peacekeeper missile tests.

I was offered a job running the Army Hotel there for the contractor and was intent on taking it. The day I was going to accept the position 911 happened and I decided I'd stay stateside.

My brother was offered  civilian A&P job on Kwajalein and he seriously looked into it.  He ultimately turned down the offer when he got to talk with someone who'd done that job before and they told him that the best part of the job was the flight off the island for R&R trips to Hawaii.  Not much to do on Kwaj except work and wait for R&R, because it's all military and contractors with no civilian population.

Basically, just like shipboard duty except ships usually get to shore more often than every six months.

I was stationed at Loran Attu in AK in 1993. Talk about isolated! Wasn't too bad there was plenty of books, movies at the station and I got really good at Super Nintendo games!

I'm curious on how they built that in an environment like that.

It was built before global warming started, when the water there was so peaceful you could water ski there.

Your video reminds me of this tower being blown up.  Why the AF didn't offer it for sale is beyond me.  A 1200ft tower would have been great for the FM and TV broadcasters who were just starting business in the Mojave Desert when this transmitter site was destroyed.

So how far is the closest 7-11 to do a beer run?
I'm thinking this would really suck.

This.  The best years of our lives were spent in Hawaii.  I served in three ships and a destroyer squadron.  They had to drag us out.  If I had the $$$, I'd live out the last years of my life in Kailua.
