In light of the Peyton "greatest ever" thread, let's see what the hive says.
|
|
Hard to compare quarterbacks from different eras since the game now is much different than it was in the 70's and whatnot.
If you twisted my arm, I would probably go Joe Montana. |
|
|
For me, Peyton manning hands down. No quarterback has ever controlled the tempo of a game more than him.

Seriously? He was entertaining to watch, but I don't think he was even top ten. If I could have added 20 names to the poll, I would have included Favre. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Montana would be my first pick, but Peyton Manning would be a close second.

Statistics may say otherwise, but Joe Montana was the best ever. No doubt in my mind!

View Quote Yep, it's never easy comparing players from different eras, so it was difficult to pick ten for the poll, but I did the best I could. |

Aaron Rodgers I think Aaron Rodgers was a better quarterback too. I almost look at Brett Farve like I look at Cal Ripken. His greatness had as much to do with his longevity and durability as anything else. Almost like a quantity as much as quality. Doesn't he also have the league record for INT's? |

Montana. No question.
Several of them have been great, including Peyton. Only 1 greatest, though. |

That'd be pretty cool |

Drew Brees. Becase Drew Brees, that's why.
ETA Marino was supposed to be the best. |

Aaron Rodgers More accurate than Favre, nearly as strong of an arm as Favre, throws on the run just as well as Favre, but doesn't throw the stupid picks that Favre did. His game management and defensive reads are not as good as Favre's were (yet), but he's getting there. Overall, I think he's already better than Favre, and the stats back that up. |

I say Montana but I grew up watching him play. We tend to let emotions dictate these type of arguments. Manning might be the smartest QB but I think Montana was a better player.

It is really hard to compare QBs honestly.
With different eras you have different advantages. Now the rules favor passers and receivers. However, back in the day there was no salary cap, meaning you could keep a better team together longer. Also, defensive players were smaller back then and the league was not so pass centric. A stud like Marino is going to stand out more when there fewer elite rivals. Go back far enough and roids were legal. Go back even farther and there are no black guys. How do you begin to factor in that? Also, what stat counts the most? QBR, TDs, Passing YRDs, Wins, Playoff Wins, Super Bowls Wins? |

Greg Cook of the Bengals is worthy of a mention. If you are not familiar, look him up.
As for the greatest - Sid Luckman |

As stated is very hard to say a greatest quarterback, there is many factors. A lot of times great quarterbacks have awesome wide receivers to make them great. Even though I'm a Packer fan I don't think Aaron Rodgers is better than Brett Favre. Rodgers had a lot of left overs from the "Favre era". Sure there was some good (and great) WR at the start of the Favre era but I don't believe no other quarterback more great WR than Brett Favre.
So yes I do think Brett Favre is the best QB with Dan Marino second for a lot of the same reason. ETA: I do think Tom Brady is the third best of all time. From being a 7th round draft pick (that no one remembers) to having several SB rings. |
