I got my first Opinel, a Carbone No.6 today and it was very dull. I like it a lot though. I am going to strop or reprofile it tomorrow. Do you have one of these little knives?

They are great values at around $12 per knife. Made in France, friction folder with a locking ring. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Never heard of them before. They are great values at around $12 per knife. Made in France, friction folder with a locking ring. If they came dull and need to be reprofiled, maybe they aren't quite the best option out there. My Benchmades work just fine for folders. |

They're well known to knife guys.
I own one. Don't like it. Rusts easily and the collar lock is shaky at best. They're like something a woodworking grandfather would carry. ETA: A brand new one should've been sharp as hell. They're a high carbon blade. Clean it well-every. single. time. you. use. it. |

Ive had one since about 92, a smaller one w/ a bubinga wood handle. Nice and sharp, good picnic knife. I carried it daily for a while until the wood became swollen due to humidity and a had a hard time opening it. Once it dried out it was fine.

I have a couple, both are stainless. Came sharp, and have nice profile. I use mine for grafting fruit trees.

Man, I had one of those when I was a kid! If I remember correctly, is it all carbon steel? I seem to remember mine rusting up real good.

I heard that the "folds when put under pressure" knife was a French design.

I have a couple that I picked up at Restoration Hardware years ago, on clearance.
No clue how they would do as an everyday carry knife, but one stays in the tool bag at work. It's very sharp and perfect for removing jackets from thin coax cable and multiconductor cable. Holds a decent edge. No complaints; would buy again. I think I paid $8 each. I wouldn't want one for heavy use, though. I don't know how strong the beechwood handle is and don't really want to find out. |

No.9
Very light, sharpens to scalpel like edge very easily. I bought some, pulled and blued the blades, sharpened and gave as gifts. They were very well received. |
|
These were the boxcutters of the late 19th - mid 20th century. Many fruit farmers use these; they are great for picking grape.

I was surprised when my mongolian guide pulled out a small opinel to gut my ibex. It did the job just fine.. |

If I had to sharpen a brand new knife, I'd be pissed. Don't buy a Benchmade then A guy over at Bladeforums has 20 Benchmades. 8 of them came so dull they would not cut paper. I'll call BS on that. How sharp were your Benchmades when you bought them? Surely you have some to be talking bad about them like that. Mine were all hair popping sharp, as were the ones bought by all my friends. And Benchmade's Life Sharp program will make things right if it needs to be cleaned, repaired, or just resharpened. |

I have 2. Like them a lot.
Sort of like a folding mora knife. Super sharp. For those that have dull ones you either got them used or you got some cheap knock off. Mine came almost sharp enough to shave hair. |

Apples, cheese, wine and skiing.
If you have three out of four you have the knife IMO. Cheers and thanks for making me remember |

What else would you barbarians use to cut your cheese and fruit at a picnic?

Owned and operated my gunshop for 16 years, sold two brands of knife- Spyderco and Benchmade (hundreds of both sold through the years) had many BM came in literally unable to cut paper- and yes these were legit BM knives. BTW- if you have to send your knife out for sharpening...turn in your man card. |

Opinels are great little knives, I use mine when when I'm around non-knife people. Sometimes my Spyderco Military scares the sheeple.

Dam, I mustve got lucky with the 4 I own, all came razor sharp.
