The fleet’s oldest deployable warship is nearing its goodbye.

The amphibious transport dock Denver returned from its final patrol in April and is set for an Aug. 14 retirement at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii after an astounding 46 years — a lifespan akin to a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

I was on the USS Duluth LPD6 for a deployment on WESTPAC98.  I saw the Denver twice docked in San Diego with the Denver Bronco's flag flying lol. It was cool since they won the superbowl that year and the previous year.
LPD's are no damn fun in hot climates.

We've got B-52's that have been on active duty longer than that.

Actually, after looking it, the last B-52 was built 6 year BEFORE this thing launched.

There's one B-52 in particular that's been flown by three generations of the same family.

Not to high-jack the thread, but I've read the the typical B-52 flight vents 55 gallons of hydraulic fluid.  Think about that in the context of flying an airframe that is at least 52 years old with untold takeoffs and landings.

I served on a gator that was 30 years old and it was worn out. When we were decommissioning her the Brazilian navy was looking at it, they turned her down. Salt water can be hard on steel.

One of the 1200 lb cruisers or (shudder) one of the BROOKE-class FFGs (aka Broke-class) with the 1200lb P-fired plants would have been MUCH worse.

I know a guy who relieved as CHENG of a steam CG in the hole, and was relieved in the hole 18 mos later.   He barely saw daylight.

You know after all the bullcrap involved with being deployed on one of these crappy gator freighters, I feel sad when I look at the ships laid up ready for scrap. It's like a slow death to a dumb loyal dog.
I'll never forget manning the rails while pulling into dock at Pearl Harbor and seeing the USS Missouri to port and the outline of the USS Arizona below the bow. It gives me the chills to this day thinking about that .
Even though I wasn't the ship's crew I am proud to have served with her. RIP  USS Duluth.

Screw that.

Lines for everything.  Wanna go eat chow?  Marines standing in line.  Wanna go grab something from the ship's store?  Marines standing in line.

You like freshwater?  Just embarked the Marines.....water hours.

I prefer a tin can.

Well it sounds like you were ship's crew. It wasn't fun sleeping in a berthing with 40 other Marines on a ship designed for the Bering Sea while in the Persian Gulf. AC was an afterthought on our ship and  It was 90* down there. All night you would hear (one of two)  air vents being turned another direction every time someone had to make a head call.
6mos out of year you were sunbathing and grilling on the steel beach, admit it.

It's kinda sad to see her get retired, but it's past time.

She took me and the rest of BLT 1/7 back home to Yokuska in 87', and the paint was getting thick on her back then.

The Galley crew just wasn't ready for the compliments(Guys sneaking in seconds), but dammit, those guys cranked out better chow underway, than any Marine chow hall on Pendleton.

For an Amphibious bus, it's not going to get much attention going away, but she stood out in my mind over half a dozen others I don't even remember the name of...

How much altitude stress did the ship experience?

To be fair, when's the last time a B-52 labored through 20 foot seas?

This would be a good idea, specially in areas where the USCG would need a mobile helicopter platform, like Alaska.

I promise you, any AF aircraft gets a lot more needed maintenance than a ship ever would.

Sounds like a USCG WHEC.

Take in lines.
Make it 60ft from the pier.
Something major catches on fire.
Shoot lines back over.
4 month patrol complete in 7 minutes.
