They killed the hair bands, for that I am forever grateful! I listened to Nevermind for the first time in 20 years a few months back. It brought back a lot of  memories from that time. Cobain was no Vai, Petrucci or Lifeson but the guy played with his heart and you could hear it in his playing.

I remember 20+ years ago driving many many hours to go see flipper and even though we meant to get their late to just see them, we got there early enough to see nirvana opening for them and was simply blown away. Amazing band.

Don't know. When did they hit the scene? I was either in my mid to late 20s living in rural Nebr. or early to mid 30s and living in rural Colo. All hail Southern Rock!

Just about every band will release two or three songs I like and I remember they were no different in that respect but I couldn't name those songs now. The previous statement that they changes music away from the 80s hairbands could be made. Music did go through a change about that time frame. Was it Nirvana that caused the change or did they just lead the way? I'm sure either side could put up a strong argument.

I was doin pretty good

Still at home,          I turned 16 in the fall of 91.      Although at that time, I had already been listening to metal and hard rock, so when it did come out it was something that I put in the didn't mind category meaning I didn't necessarily run out to listen too it, but when I heard it otherwise I enjoyed it.        Although for me the genre lasted about 18 months or so until a friend introduced me to punk/HC and I spend a few years going to those shows on a weekly and sometimes a few times a week

I love Nirvana. I don't understand why people flip out about them as if they can't play their instruments. Sure, Kurt Cobain isn't Steve Vai, but he makes great music, and he's easily as good as a guy who arfcom generally likes, such as Johnny Ramone.

There are two things working against them, as far as arfcom is concerned:

1. They were too popular (and still are). As much as arfcom hates "hipsters", they ironically share many of the same traits in music threads.

2. Nirvana is widely credited with killing a sub-genre of rock music...a sub-genre of rock music that is fondly remembered by the largest group of members by age on arfcom, namely those who came of age sometime in the 1980's.

Personally? I like the band. They're not in my top 10 or anything, but they were are good band. They were definitely an important band.

If you watch the MTV Unplugged session from 1993, you can see they were very talented.

Cobain might have been a drug-addled buffoon, and the music isn't for everyone, but they definitely were good.

Same for Pearl Jam.
Eddie Vedder might a a liberal douche-bag, but the MTV Unplugged concert is amazing.

Hardly.

The difference between Nirvana and Foo Fighters is the difference between art and plain music.

Besides, Foo FIghters would be jack and shit without the Nirvana name recognition. Kurt Cobain pretty much singlehandedly created his own sound and rose from a garage band to one of the biggest rock acts of all time.

Actually your post reply to my post put YOUR credibility even below mine.
"music hall of fame" - there is no such thing. Ding, there goes your credibility.
Ad hominem attack on my experience forming "genre forming bands". Ding, another loss to your credibility when you have to resort to ad hominem attacks.
Comparing my credibility to yours and saying my credibility is "just like" yours. Ding, another drop in your credibility because you hypocritically think I'm closed-minded and imply that you're more open-minded than me, hence, your opinion is better than mine.
Oh, and it's not just me saying it:

musicians we asked to nominate the supposedly great records they'd gladly never hear again

Nirvana, Nevermind

Nominated by Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips

It's
better to be overrated than underrated. Besides, it's not the
musicians' fault Nevermind is overrated - it's the public's, or the
critics'. But you don't find yourself ever longing to listen to it,
because there were - still are, in fact - so many mediocre bands that
sound like it, that you're constantly experiencing it. I never get out
Nevermind and think: what great production, what great songs. Nevermind
had a poisonous, pernicious influence. It legitimised suffering. The
sainthood of Kurt Cobain overshadows the album: Kurt's lyrics, his
attitudinising and navel-gazing, were hard to separate from the band's
image. You can never just hear the record. For me, Bleach and In Utero
are superior. Even the album cover seems cheap: that stupid dollar bill
just seems to have been airbrushed in there. If Alice in Chains had done
it, we'd have thought it was a joke, but because it was Nirvana we
thought it was oh-so-clever. If you think you're going to hear an
utterly original, powerful and freaky record when you put on Nevermind,
as a young kid might, Christ you're going to be disappointed. You're
going to think, "Who is this band that sounds just like Nickelback? What
are these drug addicts going on about?"

I can see that, I suppose. I think it's a matter of not understanding what makes music "art" vs just playing. You don't have to do hammer-ons and sweep arpeggios at mach fuck to be a good guitarist.
