Buying a new laptop or maybe desktop since I sit at my desk and have a nice monitor and keyboard. Which brand should I look at, or avoid?

Look at Lenovo, for a laptop, and get one of their business models, if you want a workhorse.
Their consumer models are consumer models.

For laptops - Lenova is good. MSI is good. I've been in computers 35 yrs. Get a solid state hard drive - boot up in 10-15 seconds. Shut down < 5.
I'm buying MSI myself end of year ` $1200.. Stay away from Dell.

Been a Windows guy forever and then I got a Macbook Air 2 weeks ago.
Best laptop I've ever used. Like it so much I talked my boss in to replacing my Dell with a Macbook Pro.
I work with Windows Server daily but I don't see myself ever going back to a Windows desktop/laptop if I can help it. Once I get my macbook pro I plan on carrying it back and forth to the house and I'm going to convert my desktop at home to a server. (i7 with 32GB of RAM.)

Pointless to get a laptop if it will be used at a desk a majority of the time.
