Has anybody done a 308 build using the Polymer80 lower?

Nope and I won't, to many stories of plastic lowers failing after a few hundred rounds.

Any suggestions for building a 308 AR from a 80% lower.

You can get 80% .308 aluminum lowers for around a $100 bucks if you look around and shop the sales.

Sometimes you can get them for less, I just missed a upper lower combo in EE the other day for less than $200 and there is a couple of stores selling complete out the door .308 AR's for less than $700, next time I want one, I will just order a fully functioning gun and modify the way I want.

I have used it and it has been pretty solid.

However I will say one issue I had was the detent hole was too shallow and needs to be deepened. The rear takedown pin detent was drilled off center as well.

It isn't perfect but it works at least... The only thing going for it is that it comes with a jig for the price so you wouldn't have to spend a lot of money on a jig. I did not have a mill at the time so I was able to complete one with only a dremel and a hand drill.

Long time lurker I tried the polymer 80 warrhog and it is a joke. Holes don't line up and when the buffer tube is attached it is not parallel with the rest of the gun.

I have built two of the pistols,  all I can really say,  is stuff is so cheap right now, I would just get one that is already made

by the time you dump all the money to completing it that little extra money really doesnt matter

I wouldn't use a polymer lower at all, much less with a .308.

I don't think that link is working.

I got a Polymer80 ar15 lower... tried to mill it out with xy vice and drill press. Ended up screwing it up, they gave me a new one, but it's been in my safe for a while now, I probably wont do anything with it, Maybe a 22 build. It's just cheaper to get one that's already milled out. That's what I did. I did get to keep all the bits, and the old lower (after they asked me to cut it in half)!

Another problem, was that both of them will not fit my 2 uppers without modification. You have to file out the front take down pin hole, They seem strong for a polymer (plastic) receiver, but I'm over it. I'll stick with 100% lowers from now on :D

One note I can say about Polymer80, they do have pretty good customer service, I don't know if living down the street from them has anything to do with it. They are currently here in Carson City NV, and moving to a new warehouse in Dayton, NV at the moment, So I've not had to deal with them on the phone or online, I just walk in to their warehouse.

That being said, These things would probably be best used on 22 conversions, I wouldn't use one on a 308.

Just my 2 cents.

It would be a lot cheaper for me to give them away to my friends who weld if I was a dealer.  I really should just order in a dozen w/ the flat rate shipping, as many as I've handed out.

I'm fascinated by alternative ways to make firearms, from 3-D printing, to steel flats, to Legos, to trigger jigs and thumbhole stocks, and the Flat Spot steel flats are one of the most cost-effective ways to build an AR.

I don't weld yet, so I'm merely an enabler for those who can.  If you do weld, and I end up w/ your address, you might end up w/ a heavy box on your doorstep & no idea where it came from.  It took my uncle a few weeks to find out I was the one who sent it to him.

Not of the large frame.  A number of small frames have been completed by ARFCOMmers, including @Raider14's ongoing thread:

Raider14's current thread

@sublimeshooter owes a build of a small frame sometime over the next year, which I hope he will photograph as he goes along & post:  http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1987882_Wanted---AR-thumbhole-stock-and-AR5-7-upper-owners---A-gift-for-you-.html#i65766546

This is apparently a complete large style lower on the Flat Spot's website:

ETA:  This would seem to be the only lower on the market compatible with both the long frame DPMS uppers as well as the new medium frame DPMS Gen 2 uppers - albeit you'll have to chop it & reweld it for a Gen 2 upper, and it utterly defeats the purpose of having a lightweight Gen 2 medium frame gun.

Thanks for the links and info. I wasn't aware of these before seeing your post, and, like you, I find things like this very interesting. I'm going to bookmark the threads you linked and read through them. Thanks, again.

I wish I knew how to weld, No idea about Polymer80 ar15 lowers, but my glock 19 lowers is pretty nice, and their cs is pretty great, my first lower came out with skewed pin holes, probably my fault but they sent me a new one. And the cutting in half thing is so if you throw it in the trash, you are not throwing a "complete lower" for someone to find a freak out about.

Ya, it's gonna be hard to play in the under 6 thread.  Come on, you weld steel.  You knew it was gonna be heavy.  That said, you SBR it, throw a Faxon feather 7.5" on there, you might could make it in the under 6.

    TiG aluminum billet.

Then maybe. Still alot of work for a lower.

And for $50, Anderson lowers are already heat treated, anod., and ready to go.

Things would have to get pretty bad for me to swing on over to the dark side.
