I was reading on Retro Black Rifle the squares are earlier & rectangular later? Elsewhere, I read there are 2 different squares--large & small...

Can someone clear up my confusion? My A1 kits came with squares, but the clones I made with them are A1s. I know this sounds picayune, but I'm interested in as being as accurate as possible.
