Dang.. horrible news.

As others have previously posted here, the first thing that came to my mind, was the Skyway Bridge collapse over Tampa Bay. That was a huge disaster. Never forget that.

Looking at the video it appears visibility was very clear?

Just a question, does the USN use that harbor?

Whomever was piloting that ship steered directly for the support column.

When a ship's service generator trips, you generally don't have steering or throttle control until the emergency generator cranks automatically and takes the load, which can be 15-20 seconds or so. It's normal to have several generators online when leaving or entering port to prevent a sing point of failure, assuming so and given that the power trips off at least twice, that may suggest something with the main switchboard.

I'm not saying one can conclude it was terrorism from the current data, but there are tons of reasons to suspect terrorism as a possibility in this situation.

Wonder how many ships are now trapped in port, unable to get out. Baltimore is really screwed now with the port shut down.

Nightmare fuel.

I’m guessing if there had been communication from the ship I.e mayday mayday it would have made the news

Captain hindsight mode actually no, a serious question why not have protection in front of the supports like road bridges do?

Chinese dog shit carrier?

Guess the ATF isn't going to get their glock switches after all.

People never realize just how easy it is to wipe out critical infrastructure that isn't easily repaired in a short period of time.

Maybe we should.....................

I hope the loss of life is low, at that hour it's possible, certainly if it had happened at rush hour the loss of life would have been far greater.

This.

Bridges are strong enough to carry the expected loads in the expected directions with some safety margin.  They are not designed to resist getting smacked by a 100,000 ton container ship.

Not much is.

One has to wonder if, before the strike, the ship radioed ANYONE and declared an emergency due to loss of power or rudder control. One would think they could have or should have but it'll be interesting to see if they actually did.

I'm not jumping to conclusions,  but hitting that support head on seems like a very unlikely thing to happen by pure accident.

All I can do right now is pray for the those lost....and hope this was simply a tragic accident.

Reports are that there was an explosion in the engineering spaces about a minute before the ship hit the bridge. They may have been unable to steer the ship.

There was obviously a power failure on the ship prior to impact.  You see most of the ship go dark.

It's going to be years before they remove the old bridge and build a new one.

All of the shipping lanes will be cut off in that harbor.

What about Hazmat? You can't transport it through enclosed tunnels, the bridge was the only route.

Part right.

I bet the Army Corps of Engineers and the USCG have at least the main channel clear inside three months. The approach span channels may take a little longer, but the economic impact of having the main channel closed is going to be measured with a lot of zeroes. They'll get it done.

Building the new one? That's going to take a few years.

Hazmat will have to take the long way around the city now.

Months at best.

1st its a rescue and recovery, then it's a crime scene, then you'll have to hire ocean salvers with technical divers and some big floating cranes to clear the channel.

Likely from the Nordic countries. They are the world's experts at ocean salvage and heavy lift.

It’s still wild driving over the bridge while a cruise ship or large cargo ship is going underneath it.

Security at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel this morning should reflect which way the government is leaning on terrorism vs accident. If there’s 1000s of Navy personnel recalled this morning to Norfolk to get the ships out of the harbor I’d lean towards terrorism.

I didn't think modern ships put out smoke like that.

Full power (reverse)? Trying to fire it back up?  Generators firing?

I live near Tampa and sometimes take the Skyway bridge, now imagine being stuck on it because of a wreck, this happened to me about five years ago.
There was a wreck with one car up on the side barrier, we were sitting there at the top of the bridge for several minutes before a lane was cleared and we could pass.
It was a major pucker factor.

Bridges aren’t and can’t be designed for rando cargo vessels to impact them.
