I have been cleared to donate a kidney to my daughter and we will be going under the knife as soon as next month. Are there any donors or recipients on GD who can share their experiences with me?
Edit to add GREAT NEWS. If you have read through the thread you know I got pretty damn sick with mono, so bad my ability to donate was in question. I had labs done last Thursday and the all came back G2G!!!!! We can do the transplant as soon as two weeks from now but hopefully my daughter's health will hold on until the first week of January 2017. Her family's insurance had an open season last week and her husband was able to sign up for a fantastic plan that include additional coverage for organ transplants, hospital stays and even a lump sum assistance of $10k. All this was possible because of 1) the open season at his job and 2) Obamacare makes it illegal to turn anyone down for insurance due to preexisting conditions. (She has insurance but not as good as the new coverage) 100% cleared and 100% ready to go as soon as she needs me. Scared shitless. Letter came today. Surgery is set. 11Jan 2017, we go under the knife. I am scared shitless. Just found out I get 30 days off from work paid without hitting my leave regular or sick leave! Leave starts 9 Jan 17. Yay!!!! 6Jan17, pre-op appointment. That is gonna be a LONG weekend. I will be a worried dad. |

No experience here, but that is some serious hero stuff to do for your little girl.

I can't help you there...but I hope nothing but the best for your daughter and you.

My sister-in-law donated a kidney to a stranger years ago. Best of luck to you both.

Good on you, fella. That's a huge gift to give to your huge gift.
I've got nothing to offer per your question, but I wish you both the best of luck. Y'all will be in my prayers. |

No personal experience
Closest experience I have is a friend's sister donated to the other sister Even though I'm sure there's no question of your willingness to donate with it being your daughter I'm sure it's still scary. That's an awesome gift to be able to give your child |

I have no similar experiences but would like to say I wish you and your daughter the best of luck. You are a good dad and will be in my prayers.

No advise still waiting on one, but good for you and your daughter.

Best wishes to you both. You, Sir, are a man deserving of true respect.

God bless you.
I am still trying to find a match myself, I have been told that the donor will have 5-7 weeks of downtime to recouperate. Your kidney function will actually go up a bit ( usually to about 60 percent function) the leftover one grows a bit. You should have a donor coordinator that can answer any questions you have. |

I am a recipient of both a kidney and a pancreas. A friend just recently donated a kidney to his girlfriend and as recovery time goes, he was up and mobile in days. I had a fairly rough first week and then things started to piece themselves together. I have had both for over a year now and although its a constant weekly battle trying to keep rejection from happening its been very worth it. The new meds coming out are pretty spectacular. You are awesome for doing this. Overall I have had pretty much the worst case scenario going on, and have pretty good insight as to some of the bad things that can happen. If you have any questions or things that come up, feel free to hit me up at any time.

No firsthand experience, but my father gave one of his to my aunt almost 20 years ago. IIRC took about a couple weeks for him to fully recover, but my aunt was peeing normally within minutes of the surgeons transplanting it. My dad is super healthy today, but sadly my aunt passed away from other causes a few years ago. I imagine the technology to do transplants has vastly improved since and even then both had a 100% outcome.

My thoughts are with you. That's an incredible gift you're giving and you're blessed to have a daughter. You are quite a man op.

Thanks for the support folks. The surgery is being done by the top team at MUSC in Charleston SC. I spent two days this week have a huge panel of tests done, including stress tests, a nuclear med GFR, 3D CT and a got poked by a panel of 5 docs and providers. I don't feel like a hero, I feel like a father who is desperate to save his daughter. The cost are nuts, but I won't go into that here. She is 28, a vet tech, has a great husband who works for Continental Tires. https://res.cloudinary.com/gf/image/upload/c_fill,g_center,h_532,w_532/v1468541466/UM/cqv1b0kkhregwhpd6f50 pic of said daughter. Yes, she is an Eli Mae with a small farm. View Quote In case you missed it, log out and log back in. While you may not consider yourself a hero, you damn sure are. |

Best of luck to you both. This was the most inspiring thread I've read here in a while. Brought me back to reality with my little first world issues.
