Trade union. IBEW to be specific. In IL and northwest IN if you do trade work you need to be union. Just the way it is. I've been paying union dues my whole life, which is kind of ironic since I'm not a really a pro-union guy. Teamsters, Transport Workers Union (those two were the worst) and for the past 20+ years, IBEW. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I get a 'random' drug test at least once a year. This past year I've been tested twice. Probably because one of our techs pissed hot so our company is getting a little extra scrutiny. Our drugs testing is done by the union, not the company. Union. yay Trade union. IBEW to be specific. In IL and northwest IN if you do trade work you need to be union. Just the way it is. Just means they brought in someone else's piss and didn't bother to keep it heated. If you run piss tests with any frequency, you know that isn't particularly weird. Quite common, in fact. Providing a drug free work force to the contractors. And of course, our health benefits as well as retirement come from union funds, not the contractor. Yes, there are things that unions do well compared to un-self regulated non-union contractors. May not be a popular opinion here at union hating arfcom, but at least in this region union actually does mean quality. |

From inside information at UPS, the teamsters there have successfully leveled the playing field so well, that if you spend most of your effort trying to "stick it to the man", you can retire comfortably. Skill plays only a small part in how much you get paid. Mostly it's just showing up to work for years that gets you $100K+ a year. As far as IBEW, a friend (and fellow Ham) has a good/bad opinion. Jobs in NY have all but dried up, he's working in GA now. Looking to move to SC for cheap real estate, since he no longer really cares how long his "commute" is, as nuke plants are never close anyway. He'd be making great money, if he was working all year. Quality of work is good, though, I can respect that. I'd probably be more miserable at work if I was union. That would mean that I couldn't actually work on my lunch, my hours would be very strict, probably would have to punch a time clock, and there would be very little wiggle room on the job for doing "other" things. Of course, the cadillac health plan will start being taxed as soon as Fuck'o'you'bama leaves. Overall, I find unions are in place for jobs that attract low-quality labor, not that there isn't low quality labor in IT, but those people are usually working at Sutherland or Unisys. |

It seems the one price I really wanted - the DPMS 1" stock extender - has been discontinued, and I can't find one anywhere. Fuck the internet. But then I wouldn't know all you fine folks. |

What a fucking day.
I just happened to be outside in the vicinity of our sanitary lift station when I noticed liquid begin to push out from the top of the pit. I shut off the pumps and opened it to find that one of the 3" vertical lines has sheared just below the 90. Emergency plumbing service call has been placed. Good thing I caught it before it got to "alarm level". That's when the little red light on top starts flashing. CEO already knows that I call that "my resignation light". |

Hod to work a job to repair a sewer line our boring contractors punched straight threw it and pulled our 200 pair cable pair and 144 fiber back.
I'm glad I was in the backhoe. That was still too close |
