Is anyone near Vazec, Slovakia? After years of searching I just located my grandfather's grave in the German War Cemetery in Vazec. Apparently the German War Graves Commission exhumed him and relocated him to this location in 2014. Prior to that we could find no record or mention of him anywhere.

He was killed about 5 months before my mother was born and she never knew anything beyond "Catholic nuns buried him in Poland."

If there is anyone nearby I would love to work something out and maybe get a picture of his grave marker for my mother. She's 70 and obviously never knew her father. After just discovering this information, we'll probably make a trip over to the grave site in the next year or so.

Thanks.

Bump for the afternoon in Poland/Slovakia.

If anyone's in the area I'm more than happy to pay you for your time and effort if you can make it to Vazec to take a few pictures. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The military would not think my driving across the country in a GOV was acceptable...

Post on gravefinder.com or findagrave. If you get lucky some of the geneaologists on there will be local and they can go snap a picture for you. In fact, it may already be on there. Good luck.

I am nowhere near there these days but know the region pretty well.

Google maps tells me it's a very small village, but right off the main road between Kosice and Bratislava.

I'd recommend staying in Kosice if you go there - plenty to see and do, nice places to stay - less than 2 hour drive to the village in question, all on very nice newly improved roads.

Thanks all.

In the last 2 days we've gone from "buried by Catholic nuns in Poland" sometime in 1945 to having a birth date, birth location, death date, death location, and rank.

We've sent official inquiries in to the German government and the German War Grave Commission.

It'll probably takes months or more to get the official responses but I'll update this thread as we find out new information.
