I don't understand people spending their lives worrying about other people. I just can't get my head around it.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/12/09/atheist-billboards-skip-church-on-christmas/?intcmp=hpcmt An atheist group ruffled some feathers after it bought at least two billboards urging people to skip church on Christmas, Fox 21 reported Monday. The billboards feature a smiling Santa Claus with the text: "Just be good for goodness sake. Happy Holidays! The signs appear in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Raleigh, North Carolina. American Atheists program director Nick Fish said his group aimed to combat stereotypes. We want it to be either a little funny, or edgy, or provocative in some way, so when people see it, they stop and go, Hey, wait a second, what did that just say?' he told WCNC. Not everybody was on board. It can be insulting to those who are religious and do celebrate it for Christianity and religion in general, Alexis Esselman told Fox 21. The group reports that it targets areas where evangelical Christianity has a significant presence. |
LOL! To some atheist it becomes something like a religion of its own and they try to win over converts.
As an atheist I have no use for campaigns like this. Seems like just poking Christians at a Christian holiday to rile them up.
Doesn't help anything. I say Merry Christmas, btw. |
It's ok, it is poking fun at Christians. If this was making fun of Mohamed Zero would hold a press conference.
Why do they want to "target" evangelicals? Do they think they will switch to Atheism over a bill board?
It's the same reason liberals want to ban guns.
It's the same reason that homosexuals are pushing their end game of assaulting the Church by trying to force gay marriages. It's the same explanation of why everything obama does is against America, Israel and common sense. Evil. Once you understand that aethists, agnostics are against God himself, then the rest makes sense. Evil isn't happy enough to just be evil, it has to pull down others. |
Why even bother saying Happy Holidays? If you're not Jewish, Muslim (is there a minor Muslim holiday in December? I can't remember.) or Christian, December should have no special significance. Just say Happy New Year.
Eta: why aren't they saying skip Temple, too? (Yes, that was a rhetorical question) |
Same reason Christians use signs to evangelize. No more, no less.
If that's OK for Christians, this sign is ok for atheist. Freedom of speech and religion, how does it work? |

I couldn't care less. I see it as no different than the Christian billboards I see everywhere.
I am not an Athiest or Christian for the record. |

Deist here (believes there is a "God" of some sort, but follows no religion whatsoever).
I cannot fathom what the atheists gain by spending money on these billboards. Whatever. Free speech and all that. |

I am not looking to get into a passing match but a couple of differing views. First the Pilgrims came to America because they disliked the church of England and were kind of jerks about it so then they made a business deal with the Virginia Company to come to America to basically live in religious isolation. Of course it depends on who is telling the story as to what version you hear. Second this country wasn't founded by Pilgrims. It was founded by a Decleration of Independence followed by a Constitution. 1776 not 1620. Now I know there are lots of arguments about Christian values and that is fine being a frame work for our laws and that is fine. But I hate this picture that the liberals paint of what our country was founded on meaning immigration, and I hate the premise America was born from Christianity. We were happy being English up until we were sick of being treated unfairly by our government. We didn't part ways because of religion. |
